| Dale, thanks for the info on the Artistsnetwork.com. I'm interested in trying to paint portraits, and will need to try to draw them first.

| We are just back from an overnighter out of town. For dinner at Pug Mahon's Irish Pub in Billings, MT we had pasties and I had a draught of Harp ale (only one, only one). Eilene Ivers and her band members were eating supper at the table across from us and then Kate and I proceeded to the theater where we thoroughly enjoyed the Ivers band playing Immigrant Soul, a concert of Celtic music. For those of you not familiar with her, she played lead fiddle in the original Riverdance cast and she is really, really good. The next day we visited the Western Heritage Museum for the exhibit of Clyde Aspevig's and Ben Steele's paintings. So we were thoroughly "culturevated" and invigorated. Now the yard calls, but I may sneak back to the easel for a bit first . | |

| Sounds like a terrific get away. Did Clyde Aspevig's paintings in real life live up to all the praises given him during Jo's class. I bet it was really interesting knowing what to look for as you viewed the paintings.

| Judy: In 2007 Clyde Aspevig was the Honored Artist at the Buffalo Bill Art Show and Sale here in Cody, WY. He gave a talk and painting demonstration which we attended and from which we thought we learned a lot. It was videoed and a copy of it was playing at the Western Heritage Museum along with the exhibition of his paintings. Both of us now realize that we got much more out of it this time, having taken Johannes' classes (and having matured as artists as well).
The paintings themselves included both some of his earliest works as well as a number of recent ones. There were even a few watercolors (Kate really liked those). I liked best the larger works which implied detail so well. A few of the smaller, very simple ones didn't interest me, but give me a few more years of painting and I'll probably appreciate them more. But a lot of the larger ones just grabbed ahold of me and were a feast for my eyes. I definitely appreciate and admire those paintings. And guess what! Some of them actually do show a few blades of grass (my favorites)!

| Jim,
What a fantastic opportunity to have seen him do the original presentation and then have a second opportunity by seeing the video on the heals of Jo V's classes. I know that every time I look at a painting, mine included, I see where it could have been improved. I'm glad to know that there were a few blades of grass. sometimes they just need to be there.

| Many of Clyde Aspevig's works are large and really need to be viewed at that size to fully appreciate them. I guess part of that may be because the viewer can feel more immersed in them full-size. In addition there are lots of subtle color changes that don't show up well when reduced to a small size on a monitor or in a book. His "Winter Glow" is 48" x 48". On his website the warm accents in many of the shadows and backlit areas just don't show up that well. By the way, that painting demo video is on his website http://www.clydeaspevig.com/.
Generally it is the larger works that I like best, but if anyone gets the chance to view an exhibition of his paintings I'm sure that they will find something that they really like, regardless of their individual taste in art.

| I would like to try to paint The Girl with The Pearl Earring, by Vermeer. I know that I saw detailed instructions on the internet at some time. I've spent about 4 hours looking for the demo, but haven't been able to find it. Does anybody happen to remember where it is? Thanks, Dayle | |
