PostSubject: Value Paintings   Sat Aug 01, 2015 6:08 pm

I'm continue taking digital painting classes and this month's assignments are to start with still life value paintings. I've never really done this and set up varying clusters of food, sketched them and then painted them using only different gray values.

Jan, I can't believe how much fun I am having and discovering that it is much easier than I thought.

Faisal, I can see why you do so many of them. Shaping the objects with different values and applying highlights is so rewarding. See the next post for the first three I have done.

Alan, I've been inspired by your still lifes and actually have beenimpressed at how quickly I sketch them, not worrying about detail until I start adding shading.

Judy, these are really good, and I imagine how value study can contribute to the building blocks of painting control... that is, building a painting the way you want it to look. One teacher told us that if the value was right, the eye will generally accept the colours we use..

I'm going to try glazing over them next to see how they look.

Really good! Will look forward to seeing the glazing - I think you'll be pleased at what a difference it makes, probably even in digital.

Here is the glazing doneĀ  over the fruit and veggies. That went really quickly. I'm not sure what I'm going to do to make the foreground and background more interesting. That is going to take a lot of thought and creativity.

Good Job Judy. I like the idea of doing value lessons and then going over it with color. Keep painting my friendā€¦ Smile

Thanks Faisal. All of you have been such an inspiration as I watch the different things that you all tackle.

Very nice, Judy! You'll work out the background and all. Did you learn a lot? It's a different approach to painting but has it's merits, I think.
