Painting #76: Raiding the Pantry

Hello guys,

This was done totally in WSO. 5"x7" Raymar linen panel. Any and all feedback are welcome. (Now that I see a little gradation of light in the background or a horizon line would have been nice… ).

You're spotting the flaws before we even get to look at it. That's good.

I can't see anything else that I would suggest. I like the use of blue in the shadows or the garlic and the glass. Perhaps a little more softening of the edges of the shadows on the table. Gradation to the table top might help reduce their sharpness.

I agree with Judy and although I like the colors, etc. I'm not too keen on the composition. Softening the shadows should help there though as well as gradating the background. It just feels that some of the items are too isolated or something. Love the touches of blue - really makes the painting.

Thanks, now that I too am seeing it after a little break. I feel that everything is too scattered, and yes the shadows are too intense as well... . I definitely see the background/table top having issues, which I mentioned in my first post. Excellent feedback. .

These feedback are like little gold nuggets and stays stuck in my system. I don't think all three of you (Jan, Judy, Alan) realize, what you say stays with me for my next painting and it is something about getting ones work critiqued brings a heightened sense of awareness. I truly appreciate your feedback.

That's a wonderful attitude, Faisal. However, it's usually very difficult to critique most paintings for a couple of reasons - 1) some artists are very sensitive even though they say they want critique and 2) we don't know what the artist had in mind for the painting. However, I feel as you do about criticism and consider it a learning experience. It's kinda easy to see what's right or wrong with a painting when it's someone else's work but very hard when it's your own which s why I like honest comments. I don't think anyone participating in this forum would say anything out of spite or jealousy or anything other than an honest desire to help us improve which is why I prefer this forum over all the ones I've belonged to or visited over the years.

I do understand, why artists (including myself) can be sensitive about critiques. But my end goal is to learn. I truly want feedback, because in my mind I am a legend... . The one person that is very easy to deceive and is oneself.

I understand people can be reluctant to critique someones work. I too would be a little careful doing it. That is why I make sure I write in every post to "not hold back" and so far you guys have been "Fantastic". Once again, it is what you say and sometimes don't say tells me how humans see, especially ones that are trained in the art of art, ie you all.

This is just a thought, but not one you can do with this painting as is. I was wondering if the viewer's eye was on the level rather than looking down on the objects, if that wouldn't improve the composition. It would connect them yet keep them separated because of ones being in front of others.

Of course, I can't think of a reason why an adult would be looking at them from that vantage point, but perhaps a kid who had finally gotten tall enough to see what is on the table. OOps, I think I'm getting distracted. LOL

Sorry, I was confusing.

I was wondering if a different painting of the same subject and placement would have better composition if, instead of looking down at the garlic and bottle, you were looking at it as if everything was on a shelf which was close to eye level. You would view them almost straight on or slightly above, so objects would be in front of each other. It would make the objects feel less separated visually and yet still let the viewer know they were separate objects. You all ready do this is many of your still lifes.

I hope that explains it. It was just a thought.

Think that if you want to keep working on the painting, and make it a little more interesting an addition of a horizontal line (table), at just a slight angle would help the composition as well as break up the negative space into more interesting little negative shapes.

Your Garlic is well done and I like the soft edges as often when one sees garlic one sees it though the thins skins making it look softer.

Keep working on it, you have a good start. 26+stripes

This is an old painting… I am on 100+ right now. Somehow this got revived and has moved to the front.

Faisal, I think the person who revived this post is one of those who joins groups just so he/she can get to advertise their own website. I googled him/her and found he was banned from a couple of art sites.

Maybe Judy can watch to see if he actually participates or is someone not particularly good for this forum. I wouldn't click on any web links he posts (which he now has in his signature). Don't know if he's spreading viruses or what but don't want to take any chances.
