Dubai Sunset- Yupo Paper Empty
PostSubject: Dubai Sunset- Yupo Paper   Dubai Sunset- Yupo Paper EmptyMon Nov 01, 2010 2:56 pm

I've finally gotten settle in back here in the southwest, and had a chance to paint for a while. I chose a reference picture from the August challenge which I had always meant to do but never got around to it. On my trip from back east, I visited Donna Pierce-Clark, one of our members. She does a lot of watercolor on Yupo paper which peaked my interest. I remember someone on one of the forums saying that she had use d WSO's on Yupo and was happy with it. Here is the reference piture and the beginnings for my first try.

I started on a 5 x 7 piece of Yupo and used all WN wso cad orange, cad yellow, french ultramarine, dioxazine purple and titanium white. I also used Duo lemon yellow and Cobra pyrrote red. I used the colors right out of the tubes. I found they spread smoothly, but a very light stroke or dabbing was needed to not lift the color. I could use a plain minimally dampened brush to lift color to bring more of the paper white back. I found that light dabbing was great for creating a misty feel to the transition from yellow/orange to purple. I was using my small net book to view the photo and didn't realize until I looked at it on my bigger monitor, that the foreground is sand dunes, not rocks. Here's the progress so far.

I have no idea how it will dry and if it will permanently adhere, so if any of you have ever tried it, I would love to get your input.

Judy this is looking great, I always have had difficulty painting sunsets...mine never look real. Can't wait to see the progress. It's good to see you back and painting.

Thanks Dana,

I did more work yesterday, but the water is coming out so green looking because of the light reflections in the water. Once it dries enough, I'm going to work on decreasing the green. I'll post some progress soon.

Interesting texture with the Yupo paper and technique you used. I like it a lot, and I'm glad you're back. Been a little too quiet here.

Thanks Dayle,

It has been quiet. I hope more people start getting more active again. With this Yupo paper, I'm not sure what is going to happen once it dries. I don't know if the oil in the paint will keep it from adhering. I wish I could remember who it was that said they used Yupo with the WSO. Maybe she will come across this and make a comment.

Here's the next step. I still haven't gotten the water how I want. I needs more orange and the horizon needs work...it's tilting to the right. Th paint seems ot be adhering as it dries and I'm able to add layers as I go without lifting the paint.

I guess I'll just try some more on the water. If I can't get it to work, it will go down the drain instead of in completed paintings.

Here is the final version, I hope. The addition of W/N burnt umber made the difference. The Yupa worked well and the paint help as it dried. I haven't tried scratching it or anything to see if it really is holding. Maybe I should use a Bob Ross technique of scratching in some sticks in the clumps of greenery. Here it is with a few scratches in it for the sticks. (You can't see them in the photo.)

Well done Judy

love the texture on the land.....very nice. The sun wow - you did such a nice job making it look so bright and the sunset sure makes it all look golden. Nice work Judy.
