I am new to oil painting and wso too. I have never taken classes in painting. I am hoping to learn as I go. I have been reading many books on oil painting and reading this forum. All of you are wonderful artist!!! I am hoping to be half as good.

I have Lucas wso paints and wn wso paints. I have just been mixing them with water. I would like for my painting to dry fast. I read that it takes 6 months to a year for a oil painting to dry. I would like for my painting to dry within a week or a few days. I have a small area in my living room to paint and my home is VERY small and I have children. One of our children has asthma. Any suggestions?

Hi Donna,

So glad that you have joined us. I have asthma also and that is one of the reasons I switched to WS Oils. I also have wished that they would dry a little faster, so I have experimented with some of the additives that do speed up drying.

I like using walnut oil, instead of linseed oil which seems to both my breathing. I recently started using walnut alkyd which speeds up drying, but it definitely bothered my breathing. It seems to be alkyd and linquin(??) bother me.

When I want things to dry faster or use the alkyd for glazes, I try to paint outside if at all possible, and be sure to let it dry in a room which I don't go into too often.

Hope that helps.

Judy

Hi Donna! Glad to have you here hi everyone Icon_biggrin

Here's some info about drying time for oils:

https://watersolubleoils.forumotion.com/water-soluble-oils-f5/how-long-does-it-take-for-water-soluble-oils-to-dry-t5.htm

There's also a thread about mediums for ws oils in that section, too. Some of us like to use alkyds to speed the drying time. Just have a look around, there's lots of useful info in there!

Also - Holbein Duo Aquas are advertised as quick-drying (touch-dry in 24 hours) without adding anything to them. And Lukas Berlin has a quick-dry medium that's quite different from the other alkyds - maybe that might be worth a try.

Hi Donna! Welcome to the forum! I use the Lukas Berlin Quick Dry medium and it dries very quickly. I'd say it's dry within an hour. I'm looking forward to seeing your paintings. Smile

Hi Janet and hayday77
Thanks for the help and welcome. I have to go paint now. I have to start before the kids get up. They are out of school for a week.
