| The Art History Mystery ChallengeWelcome to our totally disorganized art museum! The challenge is to help us identify all the masterworks in our virtual museum. We'll post a piece of the painting and one clue to get you started. Can you name the artist and the title of the painting? Pieces of the painting and clues to the artist's identity will be added every 24 hours until we have a winner, then the next painting in our collection will be posted. Feel free to use any resources at your disposal to help in your search. Challenge winners will receive a shiny award badge that we will add below their profile image. You will retain this award until someone else wins the award. The AHM Challenge is open to all forum members, not just ws oil painters, so join in and have some fun with us! If you would like to host a AHM Challenge painting; please send a PM to the Challenge Moderator Callie to receive instructions and notice when to post your painting. Be prepared to check in frequently while hosting a challenge! Clue = Nationality - French

| Sure looks like it, Dale. Before the second portion was revealed, I was mainly looking at portraits, because the proportions were almost square - not often seen in older works. A landscape, seascape, historical scene... would never be in that format, possibly a still-life, portrait seemed the best bet. So that narrowed it down to a few thousand paintings! | |

| Well Callie, I have to do my best to get that AHM Champ status back. (Though I may lose my job for not working) Way too competitive for my own good | |

| The information below from http://www.lib-art.com/artgallery/568-claude-vignon.html says that Claude fathered twenty children. Definately porlific at something. : CLAUDE VIGNON Date :1622-23 Technique :Oil on canvas, 95 x 90 cm Type :genre Form :painting Location :Musée du Louvre, Paris French painter and engraver, born in Tours and active mainly in Paris. His richly eclective style was formed mainly in Italy, where he worked c. 1616-1622, and his openness to very diverse influences was later fuelled by his activities as a picture dealer. Paradoxically, in view of his varied sources of inspiration, his style is the most distinctive of any French painter of his generation - highly coloured and often bizarrely expressive. Elsheimer and the Caravaggisti were strong influences on his handling of light, and his richly encrusted brushwork has striking affinities with Rembrandt, whose work he is known to have sold. Vignon is said to have fathered more than twenty children by his two wives, and his sons Claude the Younger (1633-1703) and Philippe (1638-1701) were also painters. | |
