Life sketches

I'll post a few sketches that I did today.

Here are a few sketches from life, drawn in pencil, while sipping coffee. They are true 'thumbnails' as you will see at the bottom of this first photo:

A few more here. I darkened the images so you can see the pencil. As you can tell, these are really fast, as I didn't have time to do detailed drawings of them. Maybe a few seconds, ten seconds at most. I was sitting near a coffee lineup, watching people shifting around while they waited to be served.

I don't know how you do that - it takes me forever (with lots of erasing!) to sketch moving objects and get any kind of likeness at all. Of course, I don't usually do people.

Thank you all. I want to keep my drawing skills active. But I am too shy to just draw a stranger face on, like (ahem) others can:) That's why you are seeing fast sketches of the backs and sides. But good practise in tracking a moving object with a pencil....

This is a 60 second sketch from last week's life drawing session. Hopefully this image fits within our community acceptance for artwork; let me know if it's too revealing. This was drawn with 6b pencil, on photocopy paper, and scanned at Staples...

Thanks Crystal! I am going to life drawing sessions on a weekly basis these days; a first for me. I see a difference week to week in how I see the form. I will post a sketch here once in awhile.

Nice Job!

A series of very quick sketches, these range from about 2 minutes to 5 minutes. They were done with pencil, white pencil, and/or black marker on inexpensive coloured construction paper pages. You know, the cheap back to school supply pads.

First one is likely 30 seconds:

Awesome!… Very un-belabored work. Fantastic! This is the path to improvement. Keep painting my friend (For some reason, my previous response got lost in the ether?)

These are all so detailed for the time involved! And I like that they're on toned/colored paper - I've seen sketches with less detail framed and hung.

Thanks Faisal and Jan! The models are good to work with, which makes my sketches go smoothly. Some have poses that are really creative and interesting, allowing us (the group) to loosen up and get into faster seeing+sketching.

I'm amazed every time you post more. They are so good.

Awesome Job Alan, These are a beauty to be framed. I love your bold decisive marks and it exudes confidence.

As someone said a confidently placed mark in the wrong spot makes a stronger art than a flaccid mark in the correct place.

How you could draw anything like this in 1 minute is beyond me. Great job.
