GOLDEN OPEN ACRYLICS AND HOLBEIN WATER MIXABLE OILS

Hello Everyone,

So much fun to start a new discussion here.

I have been using these two products seamlessly.
I am so amazed at the way they mix.
It's like butter!

The Open acrylic gloss medium functions as a medium for the Holbein Oils like it was made to go together.
My paintings turn out scrumptious!
I love it.

Anyone else done this?
Thoughts? Comments?

This sounds totally fascinating. Are you only mixing the Open gloss medium with the Holbeins or are you able to actual mix the Open acrylic paints with the WS Oils?

I mix those oil and acrylic pigments together!! It's all in what kind of a finished painting I want. If I want it to read OIL, then I use the linseed oil for the medium, but I am mixing the pigments! More oil than acrylic. Have only done this a few times. For the next few days, I need concentrate on some watercolor work for the class I teach on Tuesday evening, but I can give you more ideas and experiences in a few days after that.

Hanging in there. It's a good thing you can't share you cold over the computer.

Maybe tomorrow I can get out of the house and get some Holbein. I might just try it with the WN Artisan brand I have and see if that works.

Donna, thank you for sharing your experience with mixing the Holbein Duo Aqua with Golden Opens. I use to have a set of Golden Opens and gave them away to my daughter... I could kick myself now for giving them away. I'm looking forward to finding out more.

Judy, I'm looking forward to your tests. It would be interesting to see how it works with the WN Artisan as well.

I will be interested in what you think, Judy, about WN and Holbein together. I prefer Holbein because they are so buttery. I had issues with the WN I used. It was just too thick, sticky, clumpy. I even wonder if I got a bad batch? Let me know what you think about the two oils together. I think I tried it and it was "ok" --- not a real smooth mix like the Opens and the Holbeins. I just can't stop saying "amazing" in regards to this mix.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with these! I was tempted to try the GOs (golden open acrylics) for some plein air painting. I only bought 2 tubes (unbleached titanium, raw umber) to experiment with laying in a quick underpainting - then switching to ws oils. I used Artisans over them, and found if the GOs weren't dry the oils were not as smooth as usual. I'm so glad you tried the Duo Aquas with them, because the packaging says they can be mixed with other paints, and I wondered if that would be a better combination.

I did like how smooth and blendable the GOs were - like using thinned oil paints.

Donna, feel free to post your "mixed up" paintings, start a thread to show them off (and any tips/advice about mediums and mixing the paints you want to share).

What you might do is post one off of your blog. Tha t is the easiest way since it would all ready have a URL. Right click over the picture and open Properties and copy the URL.

Then in this message area, click on what looks like a landscape picture and paste the URL into that. click OK and the picture will be in your post. You may see it right away or not until you preview it. It varies.

On the mac, I just drag them from place to place.
Can I try that, or does someone with mac experience know a better way?

Donna, I would give it a try. You might have to just add the image tags after you drag it.

Can you drag the photo from somewhere on the internet where you have it posted? If so try that. Please note that it won't work to drag from your computer because in order to post it in this way on this forum it needs to be an image hosted on the internet somewhere which I think Judy mentioned.

Donna, I did a search for how to get the URL on a mac to use the process that Judy mentioned above. Here were 2 suggestions that you might find helpful.

"The way I do it is in Safari...I have tabs enabled and I just drag the image to a blank spot on the tab bar. It opens the image in a new tab with the address in the URL bar"

"If you do this often, it may be better to ditch Safari for Camino...which has a Copy Image Location command."

Donna I'm not sure if Janet's suggestion will work, but it you are trying to post a picture the does not have a url all ready like the ones on your blog, then you'll have to host it first either through a host sit you all ready use or host it through the default one you can find through the link above.


Remember there is a full explanation in "How to Load a picture". I'll get the link for you so you don't have to hunt for it.

Do the GO acrylics dry with a matte finish? How does the GO/Duo Aqua combo dry - does it have an even finish?

Cool New Year painting! are you painting oncanvas or some other support material?

That New Year's painting is all GO.
I was practicing posting, so that is not a mix.
The one I am currently working on is a mix, so will post when done.

The surface I normally use is almost always Ampersand Gessoed panel. I love it. So smooth. Sometimes I use canvas panels. I had a painting on stretched canvas get a hole in it once (raising 2 boys?), so I don't do stretched canvas much. And, when doing plein air, panels are easier.

GO/DUO mix acts like oils. The fat of the DUO takes over the lean of the GO. It becomes like an oil painting. The DUO causes the mix to dry out quicker on the palette. The DUO texture is much thicker than the GO. I found myself spraying the palette with water much more than if just GO alone.

I hadn't tried this mix for a while and was using it yesterday. I remember them mixing more easily than they did yesterday. I wonder if I used them in a different manner? I bet I used more GO and less DUO.

Some colors mixed like butter, seamlessly. Others mixed with difficulty, but as soon as I added a "mix" of linseed oil and the acrylic medium, bingo. Butter. I have to use the palette knife and really give it a good mixing, scraping that knife on the palette and mashing them together well. Once mixed, it's like they are one. Still wonder about the longevity of the painting, but it looks like an oil painting and is glossy.

GO by itself will dry mostly with a matte surface and very very smoothly! The gesso drinks it in. It is lean. However, if I add the gloss medium, it can be glossy. New Year's painting is a bit glossy.

Sorry for my wordiness. Lots to talk about with this mix. Hope you'll all try it and let me know what you find in using it.

Daily painting has pushed me beyond my normal capabilities and I appreciate the movement.

Yep, a spirit of ingenuity!! We need to keep trying new things or life gets boring.
