I've embarked on a self directed plan to paint people. To keep it small scale and manageable, I have started with Canvas paper, and a copy of a 2012 catalog. Okay, it is a slow starting self directed plan... keep costs down, work on it when I can, and mix small amounts of paint to cover very small specific areas.

here is the pencil sketch on Canvas paper, hope you can see the image. I darkened this photo a bit.
The paper is scotch taped to a plastic wrapped prepared canvas to keep it upright.
The canvas stretcher is clamped to my easel.
The tape covers some of the canvas paper, but I am okay with that. it is a makeshift solution.

Here is a quick shot of the first figure. Not great (kinda messy face) but oh well, it is some time spent painting. Very useful exercise for me. For the next painting, after I finish this one, I will work from bigger face reference, to allow myself to mix bigger areas of skin tone, and develop some skills in rendering features. This face was only about an inch high...
Of course, these are not showable outside the usual inter-artist circle, as I do not own the image; it is just for practise.

A long journey starts with the first step. And a nice first step, I must say.

Your sketch is terrific and I don't thing the face is messy at all. Viewers look at the whole from a distance and what you have done portrays his face beautifully. What a great way to challenge yourself.
