| Hi Guys, Here is my 2nd Self-Portrait. I would say this looks a lot like me (85%, my wife said). I did not do any under drawing of my features (with wet or dry media). I just put the base paint and started chiseling away with different value paint, to get the features correctly. This was all done wet in wet (clove oil) and I did it over 5 days (about 2 hours every day). I went and fixed and fixed and corrected to make sure the portrait looked like me. I worked much harder on this one than the previous painting. Staring into the mirror and doing a self-portrait is hard for me. It is a little weird because when I moved, the subject moved and that became a little unnerving after a while... . Also, because of the stare into the mirror, it looks like I am angry... I also digitally edited a couple of places to remove the base paint of grey that dried with a few bumps, but I don't think I took anything meaningful away from the painting. All constructive criticisms are welcome. Size: 8" x 10" (approx). Time: Too Long... | |

| I really like the highlights you show on the forehead and nose, lips etc. It brings the portrait into another level of finish.
The shadows seem very 'midtone' but that might have been due to the lighting you had to work with, no real dark shadow values. But I would have liked to see a difference in tone to help differentiate the chin from the shadow on the neck for example.
I also really like how you softened the edges of the shirt, and neck. It brings our eyes up to yours, where the glasses are very sharp and clear. Very good painting, Faisal!

| You do look angry in this but you do such an excellent job on portraits! I agree with Alan about needing deeper shadows/more definition in places like the chin/neck area. I have to say that the way you paint hair is super - so many people paint hair like strands of spaghetti.
Perhaps you can use the mirror to block out the portrait then have your wife take a photo so you can actually see where the shadows are, etc.

| These are awesome feedback Jan and Alan. While I was painting, I did think of making the neck a little darker, but at that time it looked ok therefore I just left it (Also, when I was squiniting, the neck and the chin appeared to be the same value). But now that I see it with fresh eyes, I definetly see a few places where I could have gone darker with values, including the neck. This is great guys keep your valuable feedback coming. Infact the neck could use some work... Oh! live and learn... Now on to the next portrait... | |

| This really came out well. I agree about he chin and neck, but I really like the way you have just a little light on your left cheek and forehead so that the face doesn't feel cut in half.
You are definitely braver than I. I've tried a self portrait once and I don't think I have any desire to do any more especially since the face in the mirror doesn't seem to be my face, but someone elses. LOL Tough getting old!!

| Thanks Judy for taking the time to give your critique... It is appreciated. The brave part is not painting ones portrait,... but showing it to the rest of the world... . I truly feel that we don't see our faces like everybody else does and ontop of that we see ourselves in the mirror which is laterally inverted. Thanks Faisal Tariq | |
