Hi Guys,

So here it is. I did this self-portrait looking into the mirror. It is difficult to look into the mirror and paint oneself. I tried to ,Ahem!... make myself a little more handsome. I gave myself a longer face and a stronger jaw than what I have Smile , and in doing so (besides many other reasons), the picture lost it's resemblance to me.. I would say on a scale of 1-10 (10 being perfect resemblence), I would say it is a 3,... maybe a 4. Well anyway, this is just the beginning... I will be posting many, many more (and will be more honest about my looks) till I nail it.

Yes! I did this in the burning garage... but magically it did not feel that bad today.

All constructive feedback are welcome... Smile

Size: 8" x 10"

You did a beautiful job...quite a handsome fella.  Your ability to handle highlights and shadows gives the portrait a definite 3D feel. The contrast of hard and soft edges are just perfect. I can't think of anything more constructive to give you than positive response.
Judy

You are off to a great start with your series of self portraits! I find faces really hard to paint, so I admire anyone who tries them. The shadow side cheek seems a bit heavier (bigger or deeper) than on the sunny side, but I just mention that so I can have something constructive to point out. Like I said, great start. Nice hair, eyes, nose and mouth, and great light in the eyes. bravo!

Yaaay!  Finally!  I think this is an awesome job.  My only comment is that the viewer's right eye doesn't seem to go with the other one.  It's probably just the shading or something with the angle of looking in a mirror as I can't offer any suggestion for improvement for it.

Did it take you very long to paint it?  I admire the fact that you're going to continue with these self portraits and would love it if you would maybe post a wip with colors used and other commentary on the process.

Good feedback Jan... This tells me what other people are seeing in my painting and what I can and can't get away with... Smile

I first sketched in my face onto the canvas.  This took me roughly 2hours... I was trying really hard to make it look like me while adding a stronger jaw and a longer face... (hence I lost the resemblance).  Then the next day I painted over what I sketeched and that took me 1.5 hours roughly.  As you can see I did not blend, I just laid the paint down, I was surprised that laying the paint down and tweaking the values was remarkably easier than I thought.  As you can see there is not a whole lot of color used, the colors are almost from the same family, just different values. The colors I used were Burnt Umber, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium white (and a touch of Alizarin Crimson on the ear).

Let me post a few more portraits and then I will add one with a commentary on my process.   (What is a wip?).

Ah!.. I see thanks Judy...

One more correction in my post (It is interesting what pops out at you when you re-read your post).  I should have said, I did not blend much, instead of saying did not blend.  My focus was laying down colors.  However, I did blend when it made sense and tried to avoid it as much as I could.
