PostSubject: Hi there!   Mon Nov 16, 2009 4:25 pm

I noticed your message on my blog and decided to come have a peek at your new forum. Well - it sure is that, namely new Smile One day old, wow.

Glad to be the first one to post.

I paint with water soluble oils because it is not so messy as with conventional oils + no need to use turps etc. At the moment I paint ancient Egyptian subjects, hoping to make an art exhibition of them one day. (I also study Egyptology).

I only have a photo of a not-yet-finished painting of Cleopatra and Caesarion here to show you. Err - I mean I would show it if I knew how this uploading thing works here (not the brightest tube of colors in the box when it comes to computers...)

Wouldn't want to lead people off the board but as I can't figure out the download thing yet, check it out at
http://ancient-egyptian-art.blogspot.com/

Copypaste that on your browser and then come back to this forum. (Sorry, Janet!)

Hi Leena! Welcome to the forum! Their was a little issue with the image you posted but I was able to get it to work. I remember seeing your painting on WetCanvas. I love this painting. Amazing detail. I'm a big fan of egyptian history. I found the best way to add a photo is to select the image tool (looks like a landscape with a tree) above the text box right click on your photo on the web select the Address (URL) copy and past it into the field in the image tool and select ok. I hope that helps. Smile

Hi Janet,

I'm Judy and thrilled to be here. I love WMO for the ability to blend, lack of toxic solvents for painting and cleaning up, and their brilliance. Here is one I did several years ago. I call it Rocky Roadrunner. I chased it back and forth across the road to get it to put up it's tail for me to photograph.

I had to load my image from my disc to servimg.com using the picture icon above with the disc in front of it and then copy the url it created to the image link next to it. It is a little confusing because you have to signup for servimg.com which is free before you can store the images.

I hope this helps for people a little less experienced with computers. If I can help, let me know.

PostSubject: Thanks for the invite   Tue Nov 17, 2009 5:29 pm

Hi Janet,

thanks for inviting me to join. My painting interest has grown immensely since discovering WMO. Makes all the difference in the world to me whether I chose to paint or do something else.

I need to learn how to be less miserly with my paint and really goop it on (with intention). i have a book by Gruppe on Brushworkbut I am still too timid to really load my brush. Hint - I keep a pair of magnifying glasses next to my easel to work on details. Get my problem?

Hi hayday77! Welcome to the forum! I'm glad you decided to join us. I use to work in acrylics and found the same thing since I switched to WMO I find myself painting a lot more. I'm pretty miserly with paint as well. I've been reluctant to do swatches because I don't want to use up paint. I understand what your talking about with details. Two things that I've tried and found worked well when I'm getting too tight is force myself to look at the reference from far away and squint which will eliminate detail and you'll see things more in masses. Another thing is use the largest brushes possible. Come join us in the Group Challenges section and join the current challenge. Play around and try new things. Don't worry about the results and focus on experimenting. I find it a great way to learn. Smile

Hi everybody!
Thanks Janet and Judy for getting my log-in glitch taken care of so I could finally join you all over here.
I think a lot of us start out a bit too miserly with the paint, and it shows - tiny blobs of paint on the palette=small brushes to dip into those little blobs=tight, thin brush strokes on the canvas. Get past the fear of wasting paint, and see if your paintings don't take on more life; you'll be able to concentrate on your subject, rather than saving paint! Doing some swatches will really help you to get to know your colors - hardly a waste of paint; more of an asset to refer back to whenever needed; especially when adding new brands and colors.

Adding to Janet's advice - if you work from a photo, you can blur it in an image editing program, then revert back to normal after you've massed in the basic shapes and colors.

Looking forward to seeing everybody in the Nov/Dec Group Challenge Very Happy

PostSubject: Are you too Miserly with your paint? How to Change That. Q&A Thread   Sat Nov 21, 2009 1:31 pm

I sent quoted copies of Hayday77, Janet and Callie to the Question and Answers Thread. I thought it would get shared more there and it is definitely a problem we all have especially at first. Great suggestions.

Thanks Judy for copying the posts! Great idea! Smile

Hi Chris! Welcome to the forum! Thank you for the kind comments regarding the portrait! Glad you decided to join us. When switching from acrylics to Water Soluble Oils I did find their was a period of adjustment. Acrylics are a great medium when you want a medium that dries fast. I made lots and lots of mud when I first started. Are you in a 12 step programme for that habit? lol! Smile

Hi Chris,

Glad you have joined us. I switch back and forth back and forth between WSO's and acrylics and sometime use both in the same painting, (acrylics under WSO's) so the transition is much easier and you have expanded your options.

I look forward to seeing you in the forum.

Judy

Hi all you WSO fans and thanks for the invite. I look forward to future discussions on all subjects. Please see my website www.mcleodfineart.com to learn a little bit about me as I will be doing the same with yours. I imagine we are spread all about the corners of this big blue marble...I'm on the East coast so will tend to check on posts first thing very early am as that is my usual computer time slot. Need to be ready with colors squeezed out as the sun warms the Eastern sky! Keep your brushes wet and your minds open! Kathleen

I was so happy that a mouse found me too...I work in WSO's often when travelling. I am primarily a plein air painter. I also have been teaching others how to use them for the past 8+ years. I really can't tell which painting was done in WSO's unless I remeber where it was painted..that is one of the beauties of this medium.

Hi Amy,
Welcome to the forum. I have the same problem when remembering which medium was used.

I look forward to seeing some of your work.
