Today, the only painting I did was to sign 2 paintings.

I used Artisan paints (same as I painted with) and added Fast Dry Medium.
One signature went okay, but I wasn't happy with the second one. So I rubbed it off with thinner (held my breath, hoping I would not rub off the painting too)
and was much happier with my second try.

I like to use block letters for my signature; I have just been doing that for so long that it is my 'way', I guess. But I have noticed that I tend to sign my name too small on larger paintings. So today, I went with a bigger brush, with block letters about .25" high.

What do you do to sign your paintings, everyone? Do you paint your signature wet on wet; do you use a scraper (not a brush) to scratch your name on the canvas, and do you always sign your name the same way?

I have used brush to paint my initials after the paint dries and I have also used the end of the brush on a wet painting to put my initials. I don't have much signing experience in the oil, but I guess this is one thing I will start doing when I decide to sell.

I do use a brush with thinned paint & usually sign the same way each time. It's difficult to sign with a brush, isn't it?

Signing was always a challenge with oils and a brush. When I first started out, I just used my initials and year, but then I switched to my first initial and last name and year. It was so much easier with acrylics because you could just wash it off if you weren't satisfied.

With WSO I always used a liner brush with paint thinned with walnut oil. I would wait about a week to give the painting a chance to dry (sort of). If I messed up, it was easy enough to gently wipe off the signature because of the oil.

I used to cheat with watercolors and acrylics by using permanent, archival ink pens with the soft, variable-width tips (Micron, I think was the name.) It made it so much easier. It doesn't work on oils though, unfortunately.
