PostSubject: zinc vs titanium white   Fri Mar 08, 2013 10:55 am

I am working with (primarily) LUKAS WM oils, tey only manufacture Titanium white which I find kinda chalky for use with portraits. So I picked up some W&N artisan Zinc white. Made a big difference not as chalky more transparent. Anybody have this experience?

I agree that the Titanium white leaves your paint looking chalky. I've had my difficulties with it too. There are some studies that have shown, but not proven that Zinc White could crack when used more than 25% mixed with your colors. I think it might be a good idea to mix your titanium and zinc together before painting or try Holbein Duos white...I think it's called ceramic white. Happy painting.

I like the chalky look of Titanium White, provided you don't over do it. Sorry! It does not help with what you are looking for, but just saying.

If you would look at this demonstration on the forum at

http://watersolubleoils.forumotion.com/t649-chalkiness-of-colors-lightened-with-white

there is a discussion about it and some ways to get around.

Hope that helps.

Judy

Zinc white (which is also called chinese white) is very transparent. It has a lower tinting strength than Titanium white.
Titanium White is very opaque, and very dense. (it is a replacement for lead white)

If you want a good alternative try Mixed white which is a as it sounds a mixture of titanium and zinc white.

Yes the Duo Ceramic white is a semi transparent white but i have no idea what pigments are used.

Daniel Smith watersoluable oil has a mixed white which uses titanium and zinc.

I never realized there was mixed one. It sounds like it might give you the best of both worlds.

I Will see about trying to do a paint out of Titanium, Zinc and Mixed white.

Also anyone else reading this, if you want something made from Daniel Smith, write/e-mail them. They have been known to create products for customers. That is why they now offer in WSO their Transparent blender, Ultramarine Blue, Ultramarine Violet and Quin Deep Gold. This was after I was told as an Employee that They were not going to offer any more colors. I have also seen DS offer Neutral Tint which mimics Winsor and Newton's NT in Watercolor cause a bunch of artists asked for it.

I have heard some recent upsetting news on Zinc White pigment. Apparently its not very archival, it tends to crack over time. Here is an article.
