PostSubject: 49th Painting: Ornament Cup   Sun Jan 20, 2013 4:21 pm

This is a cup from a tea set. This is a sort of study for a bigger painting that I am about to do and present to a friend.

Size: 5" x 7"
Time taken: 3hours.

I just love how you make everything feel so real including the texture in the highlights.

Shhhh!!!! Do you hear that inflating sound...? That is my ego... Smile

Thank you Judy for the complement. However if you think something could be improved please never hesitate, I have learnt a lot from the critiques all you guys have given me...

Once again thanks... Smile

I can only think of one time when I suggested something for you. I just always like your work because you have such a good handle on catching the highlights and shadows. I think it comes from all the black and white sketching you did previously.

I think collectively you all have suggested something somewhere and they have all helped.

Thanks.

This is another very fine painting. I am curious about how you did that texture around the cup ( the brown around the cup) It looks very interesting, like a stain. Can you tell us about that?

Thanks Alan! Actually, it is not a stain it seems like it is hand carved into the cup and had several irregularity.. which I tried to capture.

I laid a thin layer of brown which became darker as it went to the right side (towards the dark side) and then I layed the cream swirls (wet-on-wet) which got progressively darker towards the right side. And then I went back and forth trying to fix and correct things till I was satisfied... I am sure if I look at it after a while, I will find several things... but that is part of the learning... Smile

Faisal, I didn't phrase my question very well. I meant to ask about the brown background around the cup. It looks like the application of a stain, the way it is kind of mottled and interesting. Is it a few thinned layers of paint?

Oops! sorry Alan, I randomly applied thinned paint and paint straight out of the tube to get this effect. So essentially it is just thick and thin layer of paint on canvas... that is all... nothing special.. hope I answered your question. I don't exactly remember the colors I used.
