Talking about exercises. Up till the month of June, I used to go to the gym about twice a week, but I felt I needed to add something more to get in better shape. So I decided to join "Kickboxing" workout, The first 2 classes went fine. In the third class, as I was bending to touch my feet, I felt a stabbing pain in my lower back and I collapsed and layed there for a while, people in the gym looked at me in surprise and I waved to them to carry on and that I am ok, but after 10minutes, I still could not move and had to be picked up. I walked and then the pain came back and I was about to faint, but I couldn't lie down because I couldn't bend to sit, this was a catch22 of the weirdest kind, fortunately the fainting feeling subsided. Then I got my wife to come and pick me up from the gym and sitting in the car was hell. At home it got worse, and I could not get out of the bed, and finally I had to call 911 and the paramedics grabbed the corners of the bedsheet to put me on the stretcher... This thing happened 2 months ago and I still have a mild pain in my lower back...

Sorry to hear about that. I've been through that a few times working with severely disabled patients as a physical therapist.
I guess the the key is to always start a new exercise slowly, warm up gently, stretch after warming up and then start the exercise. Kick boxing is a pretty strenuous workout for your back. The old adage of stretching first before the muscles are warmed has finally been changed. It always made more sense to me to warm up first.
Hope you feel better soon, Faisal. Yeah, when you're really young you don't really need to start slow, but oh you sure have to start slow when you get older.

Thanks. I'm thinking about going back to traditional oils, only not using the toxic solvents, but baby oil instead to clean the paint off the brushes to avoid toxins, and Liquin for my medium. I've been using WSOs for over 6 years now, but I think my paintings look better with traditional oil. I wonder if others have done that and if so, for what reasons. Â And don't think it's a paint brand problem. I've used probably all of the wsos, but mostly Holbein Duo and I like walnut oil to use with them, but even using cheap Georgian oils, I got better mixing affects and the detail work looked nicer. I hate to admit this, because I had been all for wsos, and still want to be but...

This is posted in Painting Discussion: Water-Soluble Oils. I searched for "brush cleaning" to locate this post.
My art teacher has been teaching us to clean our brushes first in baby oil or safflower oil, then swish them in Awesome, rinse, and dry. It seems to be working very well with traditional oils as well as WMOs. I have used diluted Awesome for several years as a stain remover for clothing that has oil or grease stains, and my husband and I love it. We buy a spry bottle of Awesome at our Dollar Tree Store for $1.00. Awesome is supposed to be much safer than Windex as a cleaning agent. This is also very cost effective. Have fun painting. Dayle

I am so conservative when it comes to brush cleaner, thinners and paints. So I rarely have anything to contribute in those discussions. I happened upon the latest issue of Plein Air magazine today, and saw Cobra's ad inside the front cover. To susanms' point, they do not actually mention the WSO aspect of Cobra, only that it is 'solvent free', and easy to wash up. Hmm, the newest marketing idea is NOT to mention 'water soluble', just the 'solvent free oil'. (Not knocking Cobra paint; I love them and wish I could better afford them)

This has nothing to do with painting, but I wanted to share this video with you. I joined the Sweet Adeline's Chorus this summer and this is a video of our rehearsal of the Star Spangled banner in preparation of my first pubic appearance with the group at 6AM the next morning to open the International Bass Tournament on the St Lawrence River. We also sang the Canadian National Anthem.
Afterwards we went to breakfast and when we finished eating one of the customers asked us to sing a song. The restaurant was packed and we got quite an ovation afterwards. We had to sing a song that I knew since I'm only just learning the 20 or 30 the chorus knows, so we sang "Goin' To the Chapel."
Here's the video link. I'm the one on the far right in the blue shirt.

I could recognize you even if you had not told us who it was in the video... Nice Job!

Thank you both. I had tons of butterflies in my stomach in the morning, but they went right away when I started singing.

Wow, Judy, your group performed beautifully. Nice harmonies and good balance of voices. You are multitalented!

Thanks. All these interests keep me out of trouble....darn-it! I'm really having fun having time for all these different things. When I was doing three 3-day art fairs a month from 1998 to 2009, I just didn't have time for anything but getting ready for the next show. That was fun, but this is even better.

Getting ready for our show in October. The artist reception is October 4th. We are signing our newest paintings, and taking them to the frame shop soon. Here's a question: what do YOU call your artist reception? Some call them 'Opening', 'Reception', in this region some call it a 'vernissage', the French term for 'Varnishing', meant to indicate perhaps the final step in making a painting complete.

The only term I've heard is "opening reception." Good luck with your show. Sell lots of paintings.
Do you want me to come and sing the Canadian National Anthem for your opening. I know it real well, except our chorus friends from Ottawa tell us that they sing part of it in French.
Have a great show.

Thanks Judy. No Canadian Anthem required, but yes, many places sing the anthem with verses in alternating English and French. I am old school, still trying to remember the 'new' words of the anthem that were added in the 80's or so. But the exhibit is at City Hall, so hey, not a bad idea. Wine, cheese and anthem. More likely to have the wine first, then the singing, ha ha.
We are working with a very talented person who is helping us decide which paintings to hang where; there is a lot to that.
