| [img] [/img] Well I've finally actually finished a painting but it was like pulling teeth. I'm not sure oil painting is right for me but I know I haven't give them much of a chance. This is awful (no need to be kind about it) but I just couldn't get the paint to do what I wanted. Did any of you struggle at first? When did it get better? I have so many questions about manipulating the paint & making it do what I want - I'm so in awe of those of you who paint so beautifully in these paints!!! | |

| Well this looks pretty nice to me. Of course it's new type of painting for you, and the more you practice the easier it will get. I don't think the amount of time is what it takes, its just how often you work on it. You'll notice it getting better with almost every painting I think. Just relax and enjoy the different experiences. | |

| Jan, this is gorgeous. I struggle when I paint flowers, and you have captured the colour and texture beautifully. The background is nice too, and seems like the right counterpoint to the soft subject. Not much I can say about improving this one, I am just enjoying looking at it as is. Congratulations!! | |

| I think your flowers are catching the sunlight wonderfully in contrast to the darkened background. We have all struggled as we have changed to different mediums, but it definitely gets easier as you get the feel of how the paint flows and interacts.
Speaking of struggling, when I did pastels, they just did whatever I wanted. When I went to watercolors I really struggled because of having to work lite to dark which is so opposite to working with the acrylics and oils. You'll get there. Just relax and enjoy the creaminess and blending of the wso. Judy

| This is very nice work Jan. Very professional looking. I love the way you have treated the background and the way light is pouring through the petals. My biggest struggle was paint becoming sticky on the brush and just did not do what I wanted it to do. Are you experiencing something like this? If so then I would suggest to not use water at all. And if you do use water for cleaning the brush, then dip the brush back into a medium and wipe the brush and that worked for me. | |

| Thanks, Faisal.
I'm very fortunate to have found this forum before I did much with the paints and started out using the paint as it came from the tube so avoided the stickiness you mention. Now I just need to figure out how to make the paint into thin lines without using water!!!! I guess the medium is the answer to that. Need to get back to painting and more experimenting!

| A very good substitute for water is the Artisan thinner, I like it a lot. Try it and see how it works out for you.
