Acrylic Underpaintings Empty
PostSubject: Acrylic Underpaintings   Acrylic Underpaintings EmptyFri Aug 03, 2012 10:46 am

I hope I'm not coming across as a real dummy but I have a question reqarding acrylics as an underpainting for the WMO's. I'm not actually doing a grissaile but want to do the background of a future painting in acrylic sort of like Caroline Jasper or Sean Dye.

My question concerns how long to let the background dry before proceeding with the actual oil painting. I know acrylics don't actually dry immediately but need to "cure" so do I need to wait until the background is touch dry or wait a week or so for the curing to take place?

Thanks so much for all your help.

Actually, most acrylics dry really fast. That's why people like to use them for their underpainting. Unless you are using some of the new "open" or slow drying acrylics, you should be able to paint over them the next day or sometimes even sooner.

Thanks for the answer! These are regular acrylics and I knew they dried to the touch really fast but I didn't know if you could paint over them with oils because of the curing time acrylics are supposed to have. I didn't know if they could continue to "cure" with a coating of oil over them.
