Opinion on a painting sale: buyer wants to reframe it Empty

Hi guys
I have an interesting question, and would like your opinion. New members, established members alike.

Here is the situation:
One of my small paintings is on MDF panel. It is water mixable oils, on triple gessoed .25" MDF. I framed it with a very nice simple black wood frame, about 1" wide.
It looks really good, and is my 'standard' frame. The frame covers about .25" of the painting all around.

I have a potential buyer, who tells me that she would like to buy the painting, and plans to take it out of the frame, and reframe it in another type of frame to match her decor, to reveal the whole painting. The painted panel would then need to be taped in back, or somehow secured to the frame, as the new frame would not cover or support the edges of the painting. Plus they would be visible.

The panel, while gessoed and varnished, is not necessarily spotless along the edges, might have a bit of built up gesso, or paint, etc. It might also get marred during the reframing, or maybe show a pressure mark here and there, where the current frame covers that .25" edge all around.

What would you do? Would you sell the painting anyway, and advise the buyer that it is purchased 'as is', with no guarantees whatsoever?
Or would you opt not to sell it, and wait for a buyer who will purchase it and 'leave it alone'. ?

Please post your answer in the next day or so. I need to make my decision soon.

thanks!!

I believe reputation in this business is important. Both options that you are suggesting are good. But It depends on how well you know her.

Frankly, I would not sell a painting if it in anyway frustrates the buyer, this may affect your future sale or reputation. Be very candid to her and tell her why you do not want her to have it and wait for a future customer, who can keep everything intact.

On the other hand if you know exactly what the frame looks like and if you can somehow do it yourself, then this may be an option, provided it all fits.

Just my 2cents.

Good Luck

Faisal, thanks for the feedback. I have spoken with the potential buyer, who has reassured me that my painting will have a good home, and that it will still be prominently displayed even if a possible frame removal leaves a mark on it. Sounds like it is heading for a sale and a new home.

Hi Alan,

I love problems that solve themselves. It is wonderful to have understanding buyers. Best of luck in your future sales my friend.

Take Care

Alan,

As long as you have discussed the potential problems she may run into, you have done your best at being honest and should not feel guilty about selling it to her. Buyers, as opposed to lookers, are few and far between, so I would sell it to her. Perhaps on the sales slip, it should be specified "as is" and signed by her in agreement.

Good luck.
