PostSubject: 25th painting: Scent of a Woman   Fri May 11, 2012 8:40 am

This is a perfume bottle that my wife owns, It is already empty.

I did this on a gessoed masonite panel and the painting process felt different. The panel absorbed the oil like crazy and sort of dried the paint, yet keeping it active. The interesting thing was that layering seemed easier than on a canvas. what surface do you guys paint on and what has your experience been?

I did this painting with the largest brush I could use, then used the small brush for fine details, sparingly. It is very tempting to go to small brushes, but one has resist the temptation.

all constructive feedback are welcome... Smile

Looks good to me. Did you put a thin layer of clear oil over the gessoed service before painting? It helps the flow and reduces the absorption of the paint.

Hi Judy:

No, I did not. That sounds like a good idea. What kind of oil are you talking about? Would any medium do?

Thanks

Faisal

I always use walnut oil but WMO linseed oil is frequently used also by other. It is a good habit to always do this even on your gessoed canvases unless you are specifically trying to have dry brush strokes with minimal blending. I learned this from traditional oil painters. It helps the paint go on more easily on the first coat and gives the paint something to adhere to.
I just brush some on randomly over the entire painting surface and then lightly wipe most of it off so there is only a thin film and a slight gloss on the canvas.

Try it and let me know how you like it.
Judy

Very nice white reflections on the cap and black area! And I like the hint of fuschia on the top of the cap!
