PostSubject: 19th Painting: A Naked Lady "tasteful"   Mon Apr 16, 2012 1:27 am

Ha Ha Ha.... Made you look... Smile

Well in all fairness, I did say "tasteful"... Very Happy... and if an orange is not tasty (ergo tasteful) then I don't know what is?. Besides, if you think about it, a fruit has all the attributes of a sweet lady... Smile

As I mentioned in my earlier posting. I have switched to Grumbacher MAX and man what a difference. I have total control on the painting and can absolutely maneouver the paint any which way I want. If you see anything that is lacking, it probably has to do with my skill and not the paint. I have gone from apprehensive to I can't wait to get into my studio. I also forgot to mention in my previous e-mail, that blending is easier with MAX, this is something I was struggling with using the Artisan.

In painting the orange, I have laid out color notes with very little blending and used a little bit of Impasto technique. It took me 1.5hours to complete this one. I took my time doing this. I am sure I will go back in and tweak it some more tomorrow, as I will be seeing it with fresh eyes. Anyhow, here it is.

Please do tell me where the painting can improve, constructive criticism is always welcome.

F Tariq

Time: 1.5hours
Size: 6" x 8"

Hi
Nice to hear of the ease of use of the Grumbachers. I have never worked with them. Our local paint stores don't carry them. I wonder if the shadow of the orange should contain a bit of the grey of the paper around it, to cool it down.
Keep on truckin'!!

Hi WMG,

Yes! you are absolutely correct about the shadow and I think I see a few more issues. Thanks a lot for your feedback.

Hi
The exhibition is opening on May 2nd. My wife and I have assembled the program/pricing sheet, a poster, some handout flyers, the painting labels, and some business cards. Wow, lots to do! I will post an update once the show opens. And thanks for your interest!!

Hi Faisal,
Quite a tasteful lady!

I agree with Alan about the shadow and I would also suggest that the shadow lighten (more gradation) as it gets further from the orange. I also feel that a slight increase in value along the base of the orange would help it feel more attached to the surface it is standing on. Right now it feels a little "floaty" if that is a word.

Would you like to summarize your use of Grumbacher Max. There is a discussion about different paints and near the end of this particular topic there is some discussion about these paints. It will make it easier for people to search for that information if it is in a central topic. Here's the link:
http://watersolubleoils.forumotion.com/t7p150-what-brand-of-water-soluble-oils-do-you-use or you can start your own topic in Painting Discussion-Water soluble oils and name is Grumbacher Max Assessment or something like that.

Hi Judy:

Wonderful feedback. This is what I am looking for... Smile. Thank you very much to both you and Alan. Yes! you are correct about the shadow and the floating like look. Agree 100%... Smile

I would add my input of the use of the Grumbacher Max to the link you suggested.

Thanks

F Tariq

Argh! I went back to tweak the painting based on your suggestions, but all my paint mixtures had dried, even thuough they were in the plastic sealed tub. I think I will just move on to something new, don't feel like mixing another batch of paint to save this painting.

I should have used the color checker on this from the beginning and it would have come out correctly... live and learn!

I have taken up water color as well (I love the washes). I have started doing Plein Air painting with it, so little to carry and no mess. I will be putting up the paintings on my Blog. My Blog should be ready soon. I am planning to put my cafe sketches in it as well... So it will be a mixture of various things. I am also working on making pochade boxes for water color and WSO. Too many things very little time... Smile

I dropped the idea of taking the workshop with Michelle Dunaway, after I discovered the MAX... At this point, I want to see what I can do with MAX before I take any workshop...

Take Care all...

F Tariq

Be sure to create a signature for the bottom of your posts that has a link to your blog when you get it done. I'd love to see it. You can make the signature by clicking on "Profile" in the menu at the top and then click on "Signature" in the new menu that comes up.

Sorry our suggestions caused you some distress!

Judy

Thanks for the tip. I would use your suggestion for linking my blog.

No, your suggestions were valuable. I saw those very things you guys suggested the next day, when I saw it with fresh eyes but put it off. So please never hesitate to make suggestions, especially when I am asking for one... Smile. I want to learn and the one key to learning is to learn from people with experience.. Smile

Take Care

One of the challenges for me is to resume work on a painting a few weeks or even months later.
All my paints are dry, and I have forgotten what I mixed to produce them.

I use disposable palette sheets, which I keep around for just that purpose.
I can look at my dried paint piles, and usually decipher how I got that colour.
Then the challenge is to encorporate the new paint with the dry paint so it all looks alike.

Best of luck with your watercolour and your blog!

I'm moved the watercolor painting over as a new post in http://watersolubleoils.forumotion.com/t791-watercolor-sketch-of-church#9643
That way it will keep this "tasteful" post more on topic.
