| I have been using water mixable oils for about 2 years now and hope I will find some answers to questions I have about using these paints.

| Thanks for the warm welcome. My first question is about mediums. I use Winsor and Newton Artisan oils and would like to know which medium people think is best for thinning the paint down so it is suitable for glazing.
Thanks in advance Lynjo

| HI Lynjo Hopefully others can answer your question better than I, but I use Artisan thinner mixed with a tiny bit of Artisan medium. I do not add water, I only use water to wash my brushes. Not sure whether this is the answer you are looking for, or if you looking specifically for advice regarding glazing. (I have never done glazing) I work with layers, usually quite thin, and typically build my painting using several layers of paint in some areas of the canvas.

| Thanks water mixable guy - that is just what I wanted to know. I want to work with layers and that's what I call using glazes.
Ihave been trying both the fast drying medium and the general medium and I find the general medium makes the surface very sticky. Should I use some water as well or just stick to the paint and the medium.
Any advice gratefully received. Lynjo

| Hmm, things are pretty quiet on the forum these days, usually there are a lot of members who can comment.
But you should read up on the specific characteristics of the mediums, in particular the "fat over lean" principle. VERY important. That will help you make informed decisions, and avoid paint cracking etc.
I would not add water to the medium, and would use medium sparingly. Worth reading up on. Best of luck!

| Artisan Thinner can be mixed with any of the Artisan mediums. The thinner is more like a solvent with a tiny bit of oil in it. It can be used to make your painting medium much more fluid. Personally, I would never use water with the Artisan WMOs, other than to clean the brushes.
This weekend has been a three day weekend in USA. Monday was President's day, a legal holiday. We just got back from a small vacation ourselves, and it may take a while for people to get settled and back on the forum. Happy Painting.! Dayle

| Thank you Dayle and Judy for your tips. Very helpful. I find when I am using the one brush for a while it gets a bit clogged with paint even if I clean it with a rag. Then I rinse in some water, dry a bit and then keep painting. Will this affect the sticky factor above. Should I use some thinner instead to keep the brush less clogged.
All this info is great because I am the only person I know (in my class and other amateur artists) that is using these paints so find it very difficult to get any advice on using them. Thank goodness I found this forum.

| Before cleaning the brush with a rag, dip it into some oil (I prefer to use walnut oil) and then wipe with the rag and you will have less build up and you'll avoid the sticky problem. Judy | |
