Hi from Arizona Empty
PostSubject: Hi from Arizona   Hi from Arizona EmptySun Nov 20, 2011 11:25 pm

Hi everyone. I'm a rookie to oil painting and water soluble oil painting but usually a fast learner.
I don't have anything to share yet in the finished works section. My art has been in pastels for the past several years.
One day while I was blending my oil pastels I decided to watch some youtube videos on oil painting.
That led me to looking at oil paints and not wanting to deal with the odors of regular oils and clean I up I bought a nice selection of water mixables yesterday.
I gotta be honest with you all, I really don't have a clue what to do for sure.
I ordered a step by step oil painting lesson a couple of days ago from an artist whose syle I really admired but he uses regular oils.
What I need to learn before starting is how and what I will use for the first tint coat.
There are a few videos online but it seems everyone follows a different method of oil painting with these water mixables as well as regular oils.
I thought for sure there would be a lot of books on the subject but only saw a few on amazon which weren't even rated well.
So here I am excited to discover how to use my new paints and make new friends. Happy painting. Debi

Hi Debi,
Welcome to the forum. If you are in the Tucson area, I'm going to be teaching water-soluble oils at Arizona Art Supply in three, 2 hour sessions for each month from january through April. let me know if you are interested and I will give you more detail.

Meanwhile there is tons of information here. I tone my canvas by tinting my gesso with acrylic colors, let that completely dry for a day and then put a fine film of walnut oil over the acrylics as a lubricant to make the WS oils brush on more smoothly.

Hi Judy,
Thank you so much for the help. I would love to take your classes if I lived close but I'm in Phoenix. I do have some walnut alkyd medium but that probably isn't the same so I'll order some walnut oil. I'm very interested in learning the flemish technique. I hope to take photos of my progress and share once I get started. Thank you again so much for your help.
happy painting, Debi

Hi Debi,

There is an Arizona Art Supply in Phoenix that carries the walnut oil. A lot of people just go to a health food store and get the walnut oil. It is the same thing.
The walnut alkyd is a fast drying medium to add to WS oils, but it should only be used in the lower layers of your painting. Using it later may cause cracking if it dries faster than the under layers.

It can also be irritating for those of us who have allergies. I have to use it outside and make sure it dries in an area away from where I spend the most time like the bedroom which happens to be where I paint.

Thanks for your comment on my barn painting. I have actually made quite a few changes to the boring foreground and have been meaning to post it. I didn't touch the sky, though, because that was the best part of it all.

Judy

Thanks so much Judy! I am close enough to AAS to pick that up.
I checked out your barn at your website. You did a beautiful job finishing it up.
The blue jay you painted is absolutely adorable too. I'm going to go look some more later.
