I would like to hear from all on the topic of what paints you use on your palette, and if you prepare your paint with medium before starting to paint e.t.c. What are your typical steps.

Thanks

Faisal

Hi Faisal
I have been experimenting with using a very basic palette lately. My basic palette is Titanium White, Cad Yellow, Cad Red, Ultramarine Blue and Raw Umber. Those seem to cover a very wide range of colour. I do not use medium in the bottom or mid layers. Or, excuse me, I DO add a little medium and thinner together to help bind the base layer of paint. So I can paint "thin" but not dilute the paint so much that it 'falls apart', I add a little clear medium.
I only use medium otherwise on any layer after the beginning layers. hmm, hope that made sense to read...

Yes! Alan, it made perfect sense, because I know what you are saying. Especially the "falls apart" part.

I am using the following palette these days: Cad-Yellow light, Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson and Titanium White and loving it.

Thanks for sharing.

Faisal, I found that adding a brown to the palette allowed me to venture further into greys (mixing blue and brown) than just having blue. Have you considered that?

I used to have brown. I just recently reduced my palette and I am so tempted to bring back the burnt umber... Let's see how long can I last... Smile Thanks for your input alan.
