I was wondering how long everyone has been painting with Water Soluble Oils. I've been painting with this wonderful medium for around a year and a half. I finally found the medium that does everything that I want. Smile

More than 10 years for me. I got a free sample set of Artisan oils (coupon in Artist's Mag.). I was painting with regular oils at the time, but the idea of water miscable oils had me curious. After trying the samples, I went on line and ordered a full range of colors (Artisans and Max) - at the time, none of the art supply stores here had heard of them. One sales clerk tried to explain that the paints I was looking for were acrylics, since you can't use water with oils! How long have you been painting with Water Soluble Oils? Icon_lol

Since then, every time a new brand or medium has come out, I've bought some to try out.

I've been using them for about 4 years. I had used regular oils for a while, but they bothered my breathing and I hated the cleanup with the turps. I loved how they blended, though, so when I tried WSO's I was really excited. I just had to get past the stickiness of the WN brand when water was added.

I tried the different mediums WN offered for WSO, but there were problems with them which I understand, they have corrected now. I soon learned how to eliminate the problems by using walnut oil. They do dry slowly with the walnut oil, but now I have learned (Thank you , Callie) that the walnut oil alkyd will speed the drying.

I've yet to try other brands and may in the future, but for now I think I'll stick with what I have.

Callie, I can just imagine what it was like trying to buy water soluble oils when they first came out. Even now their are a lot of people who have no clue what they are. Plenty of misinformation and misunderstanting regarding WSOs.

Judy, I understand your excitement. I felt the same way when I discovered WSOs. I was using acrylics and getting really frustrated with the drying time. Tried the Golden Opens and they just didn't have the rite feel. They just don't seem to spread that readily. After starting with WSOs I did try the conventional oils but I found them really messy and working without mediums just didn't work for the way I like to paint. So I found my medium of choice with Water Soluble Oils.

So far I'm the newbie! I wonder how long I can keep that title. How long have you been painting with Water Soluble Oils? Icon_wink

How long have you been painting with Water Soluble Oils? Lol I wonder how long they'll need to be around before people realize that they're not really that new and what they are. If you want to have some real fun refer to them as Water Miscible Oils. The look of confusion on the salespersons face is priceless. Water Mixible Oils, Water Miscible Oils and Water Soluble Oils are all correct terms but depending who you talk to the terms they understand can be different. We could start a whole thread on the misrepresentation of WSOs. Reading through the whole internet about WSOs made my head hurt. Their is so much garbage being said about them. Sorry I'm going off topic. oops. How long have you been painting with Water Soluble Oils? Icon_rolleyes

Janet - I'll have to steal your newbie title for the time being.

I have been using WMOs since March. I tried regular oils at about the same time but I found them too greasy. I like the buttery texture of the W&N Artisans and haven't had a problem with them thinned with water, but have started using solvent or stand oil for thinning as they are both better mediums.

The thing I really like about WMOs is how well they adapt to plein air painting and just public painting in general. This summer we had a heat wave and painting outdoors with acrylics became impossible as the paint dried so fast. Also, while painting in public I'm often interrupted to chat with interested viewers and I don't have to worry about colours or brushes drying up on me. Then there's the nice texture and the blending - WMOs are far superior to acrylics in both these respects.

I do have to constantly explain about WMOs to artists and non-artists alike - I think that unless one has actually used them or knows someone who uses them there's still not that much knowledge about them out there.

Sofie, Congratulations on the newbie title. How long have you been painting with Water Soluble Oils? Icon_biggrin
You're so rite regarding the lack of knowledge about them out there. There are only a few books on WSOs and when you do a search on them the answers you find are very limited. That's why I felt the need for a forum for WSOs. Smile

I use W/N W/S's and like them fine so far. I might go to Holbein for some colors W/N doesn't have but so far I have been able to mix what I want. But since I am legally color blind perhaps I should just stick with the few colors I have. I'm using only about six colors right now.

Linus, I think six colors it plenty. From the link you've given to your art I would never have known that you're color blind. You do beautiful work! Smile

I, too, haven't really become comfortable with the OPEN acrylics yet - they are so much more fluid than the Golden heavy body that I am used to and so much more transparent than I am used to. I haven't quite figured out how to handle them but I am hoping that the OPEN gel I ordered will help with that - maybe I just have to get used to NOT using water with them and only use mediums - if anything.

I have traveled the same path - acrylics, now most recently OPEN acrylics, and I am still waiting on my order of WSOs to arrive to try. Since I have never tried oils, I get the feeling I will find the WSOs quite a bit different in feel to the acrylics I have used - and hopefully this is a good thing!

I have read Sean Dye's book and now have Kevin Macpherson's Fill your oil paintings with color and light and Mark Weber's Brushwork Essentials from the library. Based on the readings I have been doing throughout these forums, I ordered mostly Lukas Berlin WSOs, but did still get 1 Holbein Duo Aqua to go with them. I can't believe the price difference between the 2! I read mixed reviews about the Cobras on Dick Blick, and while all of the reviews of the Weber wOils were very good on that site, people on this forum have been less than enthusiastic about them, so I opted to not try them just yet. By changing my focus from the Duo Aquas to the Lukas Berlins, I was able to get a decent array of 7 colors for a great starting palette, whereas with the Duo Aquas, I was trying to figure out the minimum I could get by with! Smile

After 4 years of painting with WSO, I continue to love how they handle.
There also continues to be a lot of confusion about the WSO paints, as people ask me if they are like watercolours, or how they are different from acrylics. Others wonder why I wouldn't just use 'real' oil paints.
No big deal, I just continue to experiment and learn.

You know Alan, that is happening a lot more to me too. I usually just say I paint in oils, but people said how can you stand the turpentine, so I told them about WMOs. I was surprised that no one knew about them. They were very interested.

I guess we just have to keep educating people as we learn ourselves.
