Mom 1941-'42 Mom_1910

This is the painting for my last drawing in " Works in Progress. " Had lots of fun with it and I think it shows improvement. I need to fix up the scarf and I think the neck looks too wide.

Every time I see your paintings they are a great improvement over the last one. Congratulations, Linus!

Linus,

I love her eyes. You always do such a good job on those. I see you got her left shoulder problem solved. It looks good.

As far as the neck feeling too wide, if you soften the edges on each side to give the feeling of roundness (like rounding the edges of a ball), it would not look so wide. Right now the neck feels flat because the color is consistent every place except in the shadowed area under her chin.

You may want to consider softening and blending the background a little. It feel very harsh compared to the gentleness of her face.

If you haven't had a chance to look at the poll yet, please take a moment. We are trying to set some monthly demonstrations if enough people are interested. Here's the link.

I think you are right Judy, I will work on those points.
Thanks Crystal. It turned out to be a pretty good likeness and I was trying to capture the softness in her expression, actually a kind of pathos since the scarf is hiding the scar left from her tyroid surgery not too many months before, something she was very sensitive about all her life. Actuall when the picture was taken she was in some pain and I think it shows in her expression, yet she was trying to put on a " good face."

Very good likeness, Linus. I agree with Judy that you could consider softening the background ( blur it) to make people focus more on her face. I especially like your treatment of the light and shadow on the portrait!
