This painting was done with acrylics as part of the class I am taking with Johannes Vloothius and is based on one of the photos he provided for us to apply color mapping techniques to. You can see his work at
http://improvemypaintings.com/onlinegallery/

This is the preliminary value map.

Here is the painting.

I made a few revisions after he reviewed it and will post that later today.

Judy

Judy, it sounds like you are picking up some very useful tools in your workshops. Learning to visualize and analyze a scene for value would definitely help strengthen our paintings! Thanks for sharing this!

Thank you both. Here is the revised painting.

It is hard to see the change in the photo, but what was recommended to me by the instructor was to reduce the detail in the rocks on the left. I'm a detail person and tend to get hung up in them. Theoretically, the detail should be mainly used around the focal point. The details in the upper portion of the left rocks was tending to pull me away from the COF and Johannes picked up on that.

The other recommendation was to put more gradation in color. I always love the way that looks but never seem to accomplish it. Alan, you do a great job on the building fronts in your Sant'Allesio painting. I added more blues and ochres in to the lighter rocks on the right and that did help make them more interesting.

The third recommendation was to reduce the value of the tree in the right upper corner since I had identified it as being a mid-value in my value map.

There is so much to learn. I hope some of this is helpful to you all.

Judy

I can see the colors better in this one and I do love the way you handled the colors throughout the painting.

When it was critiqued for class, I was told to reduce the detail in the rocks, especially in the left. As I look at it now, I see glaring clones dead center where the rock divides the falls. Oh well, one more time.

Seems like a very different style for you Judy. I like it a lot.

Thanks Dayle,

I'm learning. I have wanted to get away from copying photos so precisely and some of these techniques that are being taught by Johannes are helping. I still have a long way to go, though.
