Troutbrook Road Church study TroutbrChStudSnap400web

This study is 6" x 12" on canvas, using Artisan WS, and Artisan thinner.
After months of distraction, I finally shook free from my schedule and grabbed the opportunity to paint.
I tried a few new techniques in this one, using a palette knife to start off the foreground trees, and some soft brushes for the branches.
I worked on this study for 2 hours Saturday and three quarters of an hour on Sunday to finish it.
Next, now that I have had a trial run, to tackle the full size version, 18" x 36".

What a pleasant little study.   And a very nice limited range of colors.   I'll look forward to seeing the progress on the larger version.   Did you brush-paint the branches before using the palette knife for the tree trunks?

Seeing that this painting has a lot of buildings reminds me to mention the following.   Johannes Vloothuis at http://improvemypaintings.com/ is presenting 4 classes on painting buildings on Saturdays. While the first one was day-before-yesterday, the slides are downloadable.   For those that sign up (19.99 US) the classes will also be available as streaming video, so missing a class won't be a problem.   This is a very busy time of year for us, so we will be doing other things on several of the Saturdays.   If it wasn't for the streaming option, we wouldn't have signed up.

Hi Jim;
Thanks for the comments.
I used the palette knife first to get thin straight lines, then brush painted over them here and there to thicken them and add more branches. I found that there was only a certain amount of thickness that I could get with the knife before it 'blobbed' paint, but the blobbing might be a result of my inexperience with the knife.
Then I used a softer brush to indicate fuzzy branches up near the treetops of the trees.

I love the quaintness of the scene. Is this from around where you live? I never think of using a palette knife for trees. You just reminded me that that is an option that I need to try.

Thanks Dayle and Judy.
The scene is from Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. We were visiting the area. It's a place called Albert Bridge, near the city of Sydney. The view is fairly representative of the region, with its small communities and lots of forest.

I've posted some 'in progress' snapshots on my blog that give a better idea of how the study/paint sketch came together. It will be interesting to translate the same view to my 18" x 36" canvas using larger brushes and more paint!

Love your colours and composition of this. I took a peek at your web/blog and saw Helen's kayak painting. It's really beautiful too.
