One of my latest plein air embarrassments:

The bottom part was coming along OK, then I got to the tree. I wiped the sky and tree off twice before this version! It just kept going from bad to worse as I kept piling paint on it to cover up the previous mess - yuck!
I've since sanded the top half of this - just in case I ever want to give it another shot.

I do love the foreground. The tree would make a very nice big leaf. I think the tree/leaf could be fixed but you've seen my landscapes so I have no clue how.

A giant leaf! I see it now! No wonder I couldn't get it to look like a tree.

Hi Janet and Callie,

My first response was also a giant maple leaf until I saw the bottom of the painting. I'm sure you'll pull it off now that you see the problem.

Judy
PS: all went very well today, but I can only work at the computer for a very
short time.

The colours are beautiful, Callie. To fix the tree you just need to bring the foliage around to cover parts of the trunk and branches. As it is now the trunk and branches are sort of appliqued on - a treatment that can sometimes be effective if the rest of the painting is done in the same style - but your foreground is done in a realistic style (and very nicely done too).

I have another entry for our Down the Drain thread. Another portrait. Their's a reason I don't usually paint people smiling... teeth. Many, many other problems with this one. One tip don't try and do a portrait without a background... stupid idea.

I see what you mean by the teeth. Forgive me I'm laughing so hard I can hardly see. My first reaction was false teeth popping out of the mouth. I've only done a few portraits with very limited smiles, though, so who am I to talk.

Thanks for sharing.

Judy

Judy, I'm glad my painting had the desired affect. I have more but I'll wait a little while be posting more so I don't hog the thread. Smile

He's not that bad! But maybe some Crest White Strips would help
I think he could be worked over, but I know it's hard to go back. Much easier to pretend it never happened and just move on

lol! Crest white strips.... I like that one. I'm with the pretend it never happened and just move on. I did learn quite a few "what not to do" on this one so I guess not all bad. Smile

Some where in the deepest, darkest corner of my basement lurks the most awful portrait attempt. I don't know why it still exists. One of these days I'll go hunt it down. I'll warn everyone before I post it, wouldn't want anyone to bust a gut from uncontrollable laughter!
