| Started this one yesterday, the beginnings of an impressionistic one. The concept behind this 8" x 16" came to me during a sleepless night a few weeks ago. I got up and started scribbling down ideas with a pencil. One of them was of "superheroes", such as Smallville's Superman, (but maybe more anonymous heroes), flying high in the sky, watching over cities. Anyway, I'll post the rest of the story on my blog, not to bore you all here. The background is a hard one to photograph, thus the two attempts at photos. I painted a "black" sky, with Raw Umber, French Ultramarine Blue, and areas of Alizarin Crimson and Cerulean Blue. Then, on top of the wet paint, I put a thinned mix of Purple and white, and flicked it onto the surface from the bristles of a toothbrush, to make the "stars". Then another round of the same thing, with thinned cerulean and white. I'll let this dry for a few days before I get into the abstract figure, and decide if I will put in a city skyline, right now I am 50/50 on that. | |

| Thank you all for your comments. Here are a couple of tiny PostIt note sketches. I am now thinking that horizontal might work better than vertical. Tending toward "B", since I can compose it with a larger figure, and apply perspective to the buildings. It seems more like what I have first envisioned. But who knows, I may change my mind yet again before the brushes get wet. | |

| You've really got me curious about how this is all going to turn out. I'm so locked into realism that this looks like it would be a real challenge. Good luck.

| It's been a busy month or so since I started this one. I finally had a chance to get painting again, and placed the figure and some buildings. The figure will need to be modeled a bit more, it's too flat so far, but I think the shape is okay. The buildings are just barely visible at the bottom of the painting in this photo. They'll need more work to define them as buildings. I tried a few things, but they're not there yet. I'll probably check out some reference photos to help me decide how much nighttime lights and reflections to put in. Just enough to define them and give the painting a sense of scale and 'ground'. | |

| It looks like you have some great angles on the buildings making it feel like you are looking up from the ground between very tall buildings. Looking good.

| I worked on this one a bit. It is an interesting process. I wasn't happy with the buildings at the bottom, so I painted over them, using a palette knife and some alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue. Then I smeared that with the palette knife, to make an effect on the building surface. That didn't really work for me, so I took more paint off again, and worked the building differently, adding windows. Nope, windows are too bright, and kind of 'off perspective'. Then I took ALL of the building off using paper towel, and painted more sky over it. This photo shows the newly painted sky area still wet. (bottom) All in a day's work. Paint it on, wipe it off. I will let this one dry before I decide whether the construction crew will return or not. | |

| Hi Alan. What you've done reminds me of a lady friend of mine who has painted landscapes for years. Everything quite standard. Then she met up with a teacher who looked at one of her paintings with which she was dissatisfied and suggested she get a paper towel and just wipe over the wet foreground. She did. He said OK now put it in a frame. She did and sold it within a week. Life's funny. When this one first started Alan I thought we were going to get a Judy Bell. Looking forward to watching progress.
