| I'm trying to do a portrait and unhappy with the chalky colors I'm getting with Titanium White. I'm not too keen on Zinc White because of the problems they've been talking about it being too brittle. Does anyone know anything about Ceramic White? I've been on the internet for 4 hours looking for some reviews on it, but can't find any. Thanks in advance! Dayle | |

| Dayle,
I'm just putting a demo together to post in this forum about glazing over titanium white to get the color you want instead on adding the white to the color which jsut makes it chalky. I'll try to get it posted tonight in the "Demo" section.
Also look at Mike Rooney's video

He talks about the very problem you are having.

| FYI: Here's a post that Holbein themselves made recently on their Facebook page regarding their Ceramic White paint: "Ceramic White is a product exclusive to Holbein. It incorporates all of best qualities of other white pigments. It contains Titanium and Strontium pigments which make it highly permanent, resistant to sulphur and non-toxic. It has superior tinting strength and covering power but in glazes has good transparency. Its drying time is fast compared to other whites and it is the brightest white."

| Guess I'll have to try this too. I recently needed to put in a lot of small white flowers in a painting. They appear a bit transparent when you look at them and I didn't want them to stand out too much in the painting. I slightly watered down zinc white and dabbed off most of it from the brush before applying it too the painting. This gave me the exact impression I wanted. These are very small dots of thin-over-thick and hopefully I can get away with it, as I really like the affect. I probably should have added WS linseed oil, but I didn't want to have to wait for it to dry. Guess I'll have to try the ceramic white with walnut oil next time. | |
