| Janet,
Definitely not up to your usual beautiful portraits which I always admire and envy. It just looks like you haven't finished it with highlighting and value changes especially in the cloth around the face. look at the one in your signature with the red cloth and see how much more the face becomes the center of attention because you have given the cloth structure and framed the face with a dark value.
Thanks for being brave enough to be the first to share. I have two I'm going to post tomorrow once I photograph them.

| Judy, thanks for the feedback! Their is a lot of abuse of white in this one and the nose is too long. This one is more of a reminder of what not to do in a painting. I still abuse white on a regular basis. I'm looking forward to seeing your entries. | |

| Janet,
Here are two links to some great videos by Mike Rooney showing you how to lighten colors without white and how to darken colors without using their complement or black. really fascinating.

| Thank you for the links Judy! Funny thing is I know about lightening a color without using white and I still do it. I'll reread through these though to refresh my memory because I'm slipping into the same habit. | |

| You've come along way since this one! Comparing this to your recent paintings, I'd say you've gotten more confident with your brush strokes - this one looks a bit unsure - lots of little dabs all over (I hope that makes sense).
I need to go take a pic of my latest clunker so Janet can have some company in here....

| Here's my latest plein air attempt. In my defense, we got rained out. When it started sprinkling, I started slapping paint on all over in a rush to "record" the scene. I present the following cartoon of a painting for your enjoyment: I think this one is going to have a fun afternoon with Mr. Sanding Block! | |

| It's not bad for having been rained on. I had no excuse with these except that I hadn't painted in 10 years and I never was good at flowers. I think I was trying to put roses on these two cacti instead of what was really in the photographs. Janet, do you think I overdid the white on the red ??roses...I mean flowers??? The scary part is I actually framed them and put them in the guest bathroom. That was 12 years ago. I think it is time to paint something else to use these frames for so I can bury these away or toss them. Judy | |

| Callie, thank you for the vote of confidence! I think you're rite about the confidence in the brushstrokes. I think that's one part of making sure I continue to paint on a regular basis because I think I lose that confidence. I can tell with your painting that you did run out of time. The brickwork to the left looks like you spent a lot of time in that area. I does look great. The rest of the painting looks like you were just starting to lay down your ideas. It really isn't that bad. Judy, ok so I'm not the only one that abuses white. They're both lovely though. I like the way you rendered that prickly stuff in the second one. The first one has a delicacy that's charming. | |

| Thanks Janet,
I like the way the prickly stuff came out in the second one, too. I should just paint over the yellow whatever it is, and maybe I could salvage that one.The other one isn't worth the time.

| Good for you Judy! A little optimism in the face of adversity! If we ever do manage to "rescue" a clunker, we should re-post the original with its new, improved version next to it. | |

| I think all the paintings are redeemable. Janet, the girls has a great facial expression and simply looks unfinished. Juidy's cactus paintings just need the flowers rtedoing, and Callie yours is a good beginning that just needs developing more - the background works very well. | |

You know you can edit your post if you think it needs it. There is an edit button in the right top corner of the post. Thanks for the comments, by the way. I agree that they all could be salvaged. Judy

| Here's one from me. from plein air, finished at home with no reference pic. I've since scraped it and redone it, but I'm still not happy with it. It's going down the tube! | |

| Sophie, The only thing I see that doesn't work are the ?rocks, pebbles? in the foreground.

| I see the edit button now, Judy, Thanks. Judy - you are so right about the rocks. The river is terrible too - water is my nemesis. Here's the redo: I had actually scraped this pic to repaint completely with something else, then the idea of misty streaming light caught hold of me and I gave it the second chance. I think the water is better in this version, but the composition isn't interesting enough for this painting to stay around. Binned! | |

| Sofie I'm looking forward to seeing your submitted painting. It doesn't appear to be showing up as it is linked to a broken link for some reason. | |

| Hi Sofie! I really like this painting. Beautiful colors and brushstrokes. Regarding the broken links. You cannot link to pictures stored on your own PC (unless it is a publicly accessible server) nor to images stored behind authentication mechanisms such as Hotmail or Yahoo mailboxes, password-protected sites, etc. The first image does not appear on your site. The second image link was linked back to a different URL then the one on your site. I hope that helps. | |

| Thanks Janet I know why the first one stopped working. The second one probably stopped because I loaded the painting to my website and then linked it before I published my website and exited. This morning I linked to my published site. | |

| Sophie,
Other than the rocks in the first one, I like it better than the second. The rocks are much better in the second but I don't know if they would fit in the first. It appears in the first that some of the rocks are under water. If you could do a soft transfer from in the water to out of the water, I bet it would work. Judy

| Thanks Judy. But I really do think this painting isn't reallyworth the effort to try to reclaim it. Using it to experiment on and play with the rocks sounds like a good plan - it's all a learning experience. | |
