PostSubject: Fuller Falls   Mon Dec 20, 2010 7:52 pm

Hi Evryone,

I finally have a chance to post my WIP so you don't think i am slacking off not painting. This is a 16 x 20 on canvas. These falls are actually very high. I know I posted some of the photos earlier this fall from my trip to Fundy Park.

I am working slowly on the moss and rocks and will still do some work on the background and water. Alex Perez has an amazing video series on painting s similar scene. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JplVt00KOnA&feature=related
You will have to search back for the first video.[img][/img]

Wow, very nice, Dale! The areas where the light filters through, such as on the foreground leaves, and the grass, are particularly beautiful.

It is coming along beautifully. Waterfalls are a challenge for me so I really appreciated the demo and look forward to following your progress.

hmm. just looked at the photo again and noted that where it seems that the light is filtering through the trees is actually where the overhead light is reflecting off the surface of the painting when I took the photo but how awesome - I may just incorporate it into the painting itself.

The composition is just great. All those lines in opposing directions, yet in harmony! The colours and values seem just right also. I too think the highlighted leaves and branches add to the painting. Great job.

Be careful, we might all just show up on your doorstep one day to have you take us to the Fundy Trail. The filtered light on the left does add depth to the painting, I hope you cab capture the feel of it.

I am not sure if the changes are noticable - but I worked on this some more - really trying to capture the dripping moss on the left side. And the glare from the overhead light still shows up on the upper left. Sorry I just replaced this with a white balanced photo

I love the colors you have put into the rocks especially in the upper right.

I am close to completing this painting but am worried about the left lower corner...Does it seem strange that the water does not go anywhere (at actually goes behind the rock)

I had fun with a palette knife on the foreground. But somehow my camera was picking up the pthalo blue in the upper dark area. it doesn't look like that in the painting.

It looks just beautiful. I don't have a problem figuring out where the water is going. Smile

To me the rock was a very important part of the painting from the get-go.   I notice in the first and second images of the painting the water in the lower left was not as bright as it is now.   I'm not sure I would change anything, because this is a super nice painting.   But if it really distracts you, at the most I would thin out (let a bit of underlying ledge show through) only the a short part of the bottom-most rivulet of water and let the one just above it stay as bright as it is.   This way your eye would be pulled to the bright rivulet which obviously goes behind the rock instead of the very bottom one.   If you try it and don't like it, going back to what you have now (which really is beautiful) will be pretty easy.   But maybe as someone in another thread said to me Very Happy "Step away from the painting . . . . . ."

Wonderful Dale!   It looks like a very nice framing job on it too.   You are obviously and deservedly very proud of the painting and the sale.   Good job!

Thanks Jim,

we have a new monitor so everything looks wide on my screen. Needs to fix that somehow.

I was lucky to find a company that comes to a city close to us a couple times a year. I picked up several frames and this one was perfect.

Congratulations on the sale, Dale. The completed painting looks beautiful in that frame. It is so nice to see you, too, standing beside it - almost like seeing you in person. Smile
