PostSubject: The fisher boy   Tue Nov 30, 2010 4:32 pm

Just started a new painting with acrylics from a group of pictures I took before I left back east. I'm putting it here because it will all be done in acrylics. I'm just too sensitive these days to even the water-soluble oils so I'm avoiding them for the time being. I'm sure I'll be using them again for outside plein air paintings , but for right now, this is it.

I just finished putting in the background colors and then masked the boy and the bright areas of the creek. I'll post more as it progresses.

Judy

Judy, this is a really good image to paint. I like the composition and the idea of the figure by the river. I will be following your progress.

Here is the beginning. The colors look weird in the photo, but are really soft to give brightness to the light coming through the trees and on the water. The boy is masked and so are the highlights on the water.

This is a 16 x 20 stretched canvas. the colors so far are cobalt blue, permanent rose, lemon yellow and raw umber. I am using mainly golden Open acrylics.

Great reference picture! The soft background colors will look really nice through the trees. Can't wait to see more.

Nice start, Judy. What are you masking with? I've never used a mask with acrylics - didn't know there was one available.

Thanks all,

Sofie, I'm using the same mask I use for watercolors. The one I have happens to be Daniel Smith, Artist Masking fluid. I chose it because it comes in an applicator with five tips to cut to the thickness you want. I have also used a brush mask for larger area.

I finally got some time to paint again on the fisher boy. Here's the latest update.

The photo makes the sky look much darker than it is but you get the gist of the progression.

Wow Judy your painting is looking beautiful! I love the composition and you did a fantastic job on the trees and the bank in the foreground. I'm looking forward to seeing your next update. Smile

Thank you both. The bank in the front corner was sort of "a happy accident." I was just trying to make rocky soil like in the photograph, but as I dabbed with a brush loaded with multiple colors, the bank form took shape. I like it too and I hope I can just bring up a little of the flatter part as if sun was shining on it through the trees.

My challenge this week will be the fisher boy. I did him on painter 11 a while back to work on shaping and angles. I hope I can carry it through in the actual painting.

Thanks Sofie,

Here is the almost finished painting. I still have some leaf work to do in the top left and some work in the right lower corner to do. I think I need to do something more with the boys face. I was hoping I didn't have to, but with everything else so detailed, he looks in need of a face lift.

I took this picture just as the sun was setting so it is a little off, but close enough for here.

That's looking very good, Judy. You mention working on the figure a bit. I would suggest adding some shadows in his clothes, but you may have wanted them as they are to make him more visible. Keep up the good work!

Here's the (almost) final. After taking that course Dale mentioned over the weekend, I made slight changes in the shape of the distant evergreen and also added a touch of burnt sienna to it. Other than that, this is what it looks like. It was done all in acrylics. A few times I was tempted to add some WSO's but then I decided not to.

It probably doesn't look much different than the last one, but I glazed some cad red over his shirt and over some of the leaves behind him to make that tree stand out more. I glazed with cad yellow light over the whiter areas of the leaves on the left. I rounded the rocks to eliminate the triangular shape which was something pointed in the class as not being a pleasing shape. I put the rocks more into shadow except the central ones to bring more light and focus to the boy. I also lightened the values of the distant trees using a glaze of dioxin purple with a touch of white in it. It is hard to see it here, but it definitely gave the painting more depth. I also added slightly more detail to his face and shadowing to give it more shape.

I like what you've done with the water. I find it challenging to render moving water. bravo!

Thank you all,

It was definitely challenging with all that green but I think I finally got everything in balance.

Thanks Debi. It reminds me of summer when the weather gets too cold.
