Is there any kind of colored pencils that you can paint over, with a sealer or anything? I have a broken hip and cannot carry much (especially water), and guess that's going to go on for a while. I just used some dollar store type of colored pencils and I think I could do that. The only thing is I will need better pencils and it would be nice if I could sort of use them to block in colors. Maybe the colored pencils that you could use water with? How would I seal them? Do you know which brand is best? Thanks you guys!

Dayle,

I've used Caran d'Ache Neocolor II water-soluble wax pastels which I used dry for the background and then took a damp brush and went over them to make them more like water-color. After they dried, I sprayed them with clear acrylic (Krylon) outside and let them dry and seal them. Later I painted my cat over the bakground with my WM oils and that worked very well.

The Neocolors are like crayons so they are not messy to work with and you can blend them much easier than colored pencils. it takes only a dampened brush to blend them effectively.

Thanks Judy! I'm afraid that I got too excited and already ordered a set of prismacolors colored pencils for portraits. I didn't want to wait since I finally found something that I could use for art for now. I understand from WetCanvas that colored pencils have a wax base that is good for painting over with oils. Thanks for all your help! I really appreciate it--I was getting kind of desperate for a way to do something. It's funny, I've never cared for drawing, I was okay with it but hated it compared to oil painting. Once I started drawing with the colored pencils, I found that I really liked it. Guess I'm a color addict! lol!

Good! I'm glad you found something that will get you through these next few months. Have a Happy Thanksgiving tomorrow. Hope you're not snowed in too bad.
