PostSubject: Sant'Allessio Terrace   Fri Nov 12, 2010 11:02 am

Started and finished this study yesterday. I took the image in October 1999, in a little Sicilian community near Taormina. This one is from the balcony of the President Kennedy hotel. This paint sketch is 6" x 12", and a bit loose. It's a trial run for a larger version I am going to tackle soon, at 24" x 36".

Nicely done. It is interesting that a hotel named after President Kennedy would be found in the middle of Scilly. Beautiful vantage point for a painting.

A very interesting painting. Love the colors. Hope you will show us the larger painting when it's done. I really like this.

I wish I were there right now! I'm looking forward to seeing the big version when you complete it. Smile

Alan - is that a hotel balcony in which you painted it from?

I do like the sturctures....and yes is is loose, but like that feel with buildings, as they can get a bit too rigid sometimes....I also hope you share your larger one as it progresses with the different stages. Thank you

Thank you all for your comments.
Dana, yes, the photo is from the balcony. Interesting town, on the coast of the Mediterranean. I was able to jog and swim here. I was on one of those package bus tours, and we stayed in this town a few days. Some of the bus tour travellers kicked up a fuss at having been placed on the "parking lot" side of the hotel, but I just looked up a little, and saw this view, above the lot.

I went for pizza one night, at an outdoor pizzeria, down the street. The locals were all out, having supper at around 8pm. The locals eat pizza with a knife and fork, cutting off bite sized pieces. I had boiled egg and green pea pizza. Delicious!
One other menu choice was seafoodpizza, which from my primitive Italian included octopus, shrimp, squid, mussels and other delicacies. I decided, in the spirit of protecting my traveller tummy, to go conservative. Now I wonder what it would have been like.
Must return there!

Just like pizza in France. Nothing better than sitting on a terrace watching the boats come in for the evening while enjoying a crusty pizza and a carafe of rose. The "neptune" is one of my favorites.
I love your balcony scene, especially the loose brushwork. I hope you can keep that going in your larger version. thumbs up

I think the view above the parking lot was marvelous. The creative eye in you could look above the parking lot to find beauty. I feel sorry for people who can't do that. They miss so much.

About the pizza, I grew up in NY City and we picked up our pizza slice. When I moved to Buffalo, NY, to go to college, they ate their pizza with knife and fork. I guess it depends on how many toppings you get on it.
