Hello all,
The Portrait society of Canada holds an annual contest for best portait of the year. This year's people's choice award went to Steven Rosati for his work entitled "Summer in Venice". This amazing work was done entirely with Water Soluble oil colors. This is a very prestigious award, congratulations Steven if you are out there!

More about the PSOC and Steven's work here:

Thanks Judy and Janet,
I think we need to make a push at all levels of professional painting to show the legitimacy of WMOs, how they are now part of many private collections, winning awards and allowing artist to paint in oil when they may have thought that this was no longer an option for them.

I have a project coming to fruition in Boston at the statehouse, then on to several instalations in Massachusetts with artist who have teamed up with Art Therapy programs which I'll share more about here on this forum, but it really shows how approachable this medium is and how (aside from cadmiums and cobalts), it can be used by young and old alike, as well as prestigious artsts.

I've been a professional artist using wmos since soon after they were first released; however, I'm not a paint salesman. Nonetheless, I do get annoyed when those who use regular oils make incorrect statements about them, comparing the poor performance of one brand to all the others. At first, I was very vocal about defending them, now I just ignore it. There's a lack of proper education out there about how to use them correctly.

The selling point on using water is not enough. No matter how convenient they may be or their lower health risks, if they perform worse than regular oils using turpentine then that's not much of an advantage. Often that falls back on them not being used correctly, which indicates the problem of poor instruction. To be fair, there are ways of painting with regular oils that also avoids using solvents.

The main obstacle they face in comparison to all the regular oils, imho, is that there are not enough brands that are professional grade; that are highly pigmented or don't have performance issues, which limits the choices. If more companies that make the best professional grade regular oils also made wmos of equal quality, we wouldn't need to promote them.

Kyle, I'm looking forward to hearing more as well. Smile

David, I agree that the main issue is that people don't use them correctly. Smile

I think one of the problems I see is professional painters that do use WMOs label their paintings as oils so it's really difficult to know which paintings are painted with them and people are under the impression that their isn't any professional painters using them thus they're not for professional painting.

I don't see the need to label them that way myself, since they are oils. In the end, there's no way to tell the difference. The only way to prove it would be to show the painting in process. If they were labeled as such it might lead people to consider them as having to be treated as separate in terms of care and handling, which isn't correct.

Ultimately, the goal here is to get them in the hands of as many people as possible at a good price. W&N has led the way in that regards, particularly at hobby stores, but I wouldn't praise them as being the best example of wmos, unfortunately. There's also a fairly good grouping that many online stores, such as Blick, use to separate the "student grade" from "pro grade" for regular oils, but all the wmos are tossed into the same pile. Unless the shopper does some research before hand they won't know what they're getting.
