Here is the finished sunset painting done on Yupa Paper. You can see all the details and progressive steps in the WIP section.

I think it turned out really nice! How do you feel about painting on Yupa paper? Do you think you'd want to try it again? Do you need to glue it to a board, or do you think it's thick enough to frame by itself?

Very nice Judy -- love how bright the sun looks and the texture on the land. What size is the piece?

Dayle those are great questions....looking forward to hear -- I will have to look up that kind of paper and read more about it. Thank you for asking, sure is quiet around here.

Wondering where everyone is and how they are doing - hope no flu going around....

Wow, this one cheers me up today. Strong colours! Maybe I'll come back and check it out from time to time throughout the day ( it's a wet and windy Monday here)Smile

I particularly like the texture of the foreground, and how you treated the sun.

I think that showing the sun in a painting is one of the most difficult challenges for an artist. There is a Bierstadt in the Buffalo Bill Historical Center here in Cody (Island Lake, Wind River Range) that is very dramatic and beautiful. He chose to emphasize the play of light and shadow on the land. The sun is not that noticeable as it somewhat blends into the sky around it. I cannot bring myself to even hint at "improving" a Bierstadt Evil or Very Mad. Messing with the values here (darkening the sky) would really throw off the values used so effectively in the land portrayal.

However, if I had copied this painting at the class I attended at the BBHC (instead of Bierstadt's Whyte's Lake) I would have attempted to add a bit more green in the sky outward from the sun -a green of as light a value as I could get and still hint at green. (and that probably would have been an utter failure Very Happy).

Judy, I think by narrowing the range of all other values to the dark side (oh my gosh, Judy went to the dark side!!!!!!!) you chose the best course. The photo sends out a siren song to darken the land, but that probably would have spoiled the effect. Super difficult subject, and the right choices on your part. Good-oh!

Thank you all. This was on a piece of 5 x 7 yupo paper. It really isn't paper, but a synthetic poly...something or other....plastic. It does not absorb the paint at all but has a very smooth surface that interacts with a variety paints differently.

Texturing of the land went very easily by dabbing on the paint and allowing some of the white of the paper to show through. Then as layers dried, I did washes of cad orange and finally burnt umber. The transparency of the paints allowed the texture to remain.

Funny you should mention green, Jim. My earlier layers of the water kept coming up very green because I had ultramarine blue down first and then added cad orange to grey it up and also highlight in the orange. Green was the results instead. I didn't dare allow that to happen in the sky. In the actual painting, there is more of a transition between the orange, yellow and the blues, pinks and purples of the sky. I just couldn't get thephoto to show up that transition.

I think I prefer using the yupa with acrylics and watercolor techniques. You can get some really interesting effects. Check out some of Donna's work with Yupo on her website http://donnapierceclark.com/works

I would put an acid free foam board or backer board behind the yupo for framing. This painting was definitely a challenge, especially since I'm not real patient about waiting for the layers to dry. The sky, especially was very slow to dry and remained tacky at times when trying to blend colors.

On to the next project what ever that will be. Thanks for all the input.
