I thought I would get a start on some still life so grabbed some onions out of the fridge and did an acrylic underpainting. I also discovered that onions develop much more interesting peeling when left in a hot cottage. Must remember to have them drier to begin with.

Great detail Dale -- Are you using paynes gray for your black and white?

I did the underpainting in rgular acrylics black and white. I tried to be very careful capturing the correct tonal qualities - lots of mixing of B&W. I used a tonal scale, held it up next to a piece of cardboard with a small rectangle in it so I could see both the subject and the value scale with the light falling on both. Then I matched the value. It was so much easier when I was able to isolate specific areas.

Thanks everyone - I used a comparative value scale this time and I think it made a difference
