| Another one using the same stand of trees and the stream but from a different angle. I'm trying to speed up cos' I've got some exciting new images and have a photoshoot with a model coming up. Just been reading about Burton Silverman. He evidently started out as an illustrator and is quite proud of the speed he can work at. Wish I'd been an illustrator! | |

| Looking good Kopo. Remember speed isn't everything. I'd hate to have you rush through all those wonderful expressive faces you always make. Judy | |

| Possibly my thinking is that I am slow cos' I lack confidence. I want to be able to make a mark on a canvas and it is 'right'. Still I haven't been painting as long as he has. Jack | |

| Slow, fast, whatever - just do what feels right to you at the time. This is coming along nicely. I like the setting too so I can understand you wanting to do another one in this woodland stream. | |

| I work in advertising, and "back in the day", we used to produce ad layouts using markers. Nowadays, this is done with computers, but at that time, we would render type, and photos using Pantone markers, by hand. I worked many many hours on layouts even halfway through the night, and over a few years, developed my speed. I could do a page an hour, or even faster if the client would accept "rough" sketches, rather than fully mocked up ad pages.
The key for me was just doing it over and over, to deadline.
Unfortunately, while it sped up my drawing and layout skills, very little of this speed has transferred to oil painting. As I learn, I realize that my oil painting technique relies too much on the marker rendering style, and will evolve into more of a painted style as I progress.

| Sorry, just waking up, so a bit distracted. What I meant to emphasize is that from my experience, speed comes with practise, just doing something over and over. Best to work at your own pace and put less pressure on yourself. Give yourself time to experiment and learn... | |

| Jack,
Don't you think that it depends on the painting -- each piece can take different times and energy...some just come to completion fast and some take a while? I have pieces that went very fast, then others took a long time, sometimes I just had to put them aside until I was ready to finish them.
Just a personal question -- feel free not to answer if you desire, but why would you want to go fast on each piece -- I like to have seveal pieces in the works, it's like a book I don't just read one or eat the same thing every day all day long, because my appitite changes from day to day. When I am painting I may have to wait for the piece to dry and having another one in the works gives me one to or two or three to work on while I am waiting or can't decide how or what to do with it -- needing time to get the perspective I may need for it, for me just takes sometimes longer than others.
Have fun at your photo shoot -- hope it goes well for you. | |
