Plein air painting is different from painting from photos for a number of reasons, one of the main ones being that you have a wide angle view of the scenery in front of you, not something that the camera has already cropped for you. Many artists go out with a view finder - a sort of window that they use to select a portion of the scene. Others prefer just to eyeball it, and then try to stick to the chosen area, keeping the parameters in mind. I prefer this meathod, but I constantly have to remind myself where the cut-off area is, so I don't include elements that are in my field of vision, but not in my composition. Last night I wasn't paying enough attention, and it wasn't until I checked the photo of the scene I was painting afterwards, that I realised how far off I got. Pictures to follow.

The whole view from my set-up. The cars parked there after I began my painting.

The painting. As you can see I didn't do the houses quite the same as they were, but I put in quite a few of them. they were all out there on the hillside jumping out at me.

If you check the treeline in the painting, this is really the area I should have been working with - I should only have had one house on that far shore. It just goes to show how distracting everything out there is. This was a great lesson for me. Wink

Sofie thank you for sharing your experience! It's a very nice painting but can see how the crop would have made a better painting. Something to certainly consider when I test out plein air painting. Smile

Thank you for this subforum. I especially like that we get to see the photo as well as the painting - great teaching tools for us.

Thank you -- I am hoping to paint Plein air some day -- I am trying to learn more before I start so I have enough info to be able to start a painting. It also helps to see the photo of what you used so I can visualize what you chose to capture in your painting

The wheather has been so very nice here and perfect to get out and paint.... artist
