One in progress, the wide shot shows my portion of the very tidy, organized studio area, ha ha. A basement corner, pretty much unadorned by anything in the way of finished walls or creature comforts. But it's fine for now. We have all the basics, and a Radio/Cd player nearby.

I have the background of the painting where I want it so far, and now roughing in the shapes and colours of the people. Then I'll start to modify things, and add more colours into the clothing.

Then put in a few yachts, up in the right corner.

You certainly have a lot on the go in your studio. Great start on your umbrella painting. It's nice to see the process. I'm looking forward to the updates!

You are really brave to do so many people at once, but you've captures all the different postures very well.

Nice one. A good figurative/narrative work. Just one comment. The fellow in the background higher than the rest of the group, might he not knock your perspective out?
I also like the look of your studio and I'd love to see a close up of that painting to the left of the easel, the darks and yellows one.

Thanks for your comments, Jack. The lone figure at the top is a "local", I think, passing through. I kept him in because I liked his positioning up against the column (it's behind him, but not painted in yet).

I used a projector to map the painting from its original photo reference. I cropped it, and eliminated some people that were partly cut off in the photo, around the edges, but kept the lady in red in the bottom left, who was talking with someone "out of frame".

The paintings you see in the studio photo are completed, but we have limited space to display our work, and these are still unframed, so I suspend them on long screws that I put directly into the wood studs. Most of those you see are mine, and Helen's are elsewhere along the other walls. It's a crude gallery, but it gets them up off the floor and not touching each other.

I will post low res photos of the dark and yellow paintings you mention in the completed paintings section soon. They were the result of a very interesting experiment, which I will explain there... Smile

" border="0" /> Here is an update on the Capri umbrellas painting. Yesterday, I did some work on the clothing and skin tones, and added the climbing plants on the two pillars. The faces of a few people are proving to be challenging, so I will be back to further develop them. Still in progress, this is 25 hours in.

Fascinating. I'm especially drawn to all the different postures each person has. The are all so natural and comfortable looking.

" border="0" />

Got a little further with Umbrellas this week. Our basement studio remains cool, even during the evening of 32C days. It makes up for the winter months when I paint wearing a hoodie.

I have begun adding darker values to some of the clothing, and working on the faces. The faces, the faces, I am learning more and more about what works and what doesn't. Just enough detail to look like a face, but not enough to count the eyelashes, ha ha.

Over the years, I've studied foreign languages and practised playing guitar, and can now recognize the signs through my exasperation: I am learning.

Next, more face practise, solidify and simplify some of the figures, then put more tile/brick, to fill in around those figures.

Your people are really coming to life – I am just so amazed at how real and very personal the people are looking—seeming to have their own personalities and each telling their own story….like I am there with them – fantastic work….just loving being a part of sharing in on your painting – Thank you for the close-up photo thumbs up

Making progress on this one, little by little. I am learning a lot by doing this larger work. My brushwork needs to adapt to the larger space. I need to step further away from the canvas, and try to see it as one composition. Ah well. Here it is as of today...

It's looking good. There sure is a lot of work in that one, but very impressive. I would never dare to do so many people.
