| I've selected a several reference photos. Post your updates to this thread and or finished painting. You can work on as many of the photos you would like. You can use any style you would like and change the photograph in any way you'd like. Have fun! | I've finished the underpainting for the apple. I used acrylics the golden brand which has the full range of neutrals. I'm really rusty when it comes to acrylics so weird not being able to blend but much easier then mixing my own range of neutrals. It's just the underpainting so I guess needing the blend is not a major factor. | |

| Looking good, Janet! What size is this? Are you painting on paper? | |

| Janet,
The apple looks great. Once you glaze it, I bet the detail will just jump out at you. The way Callie demonstrated it previously, I couldn't believe the depth of color once I glazed it.
I'll be watching with anticipation.

| Thank you Callie! It's 6X6 on canvas.
Thank you Judy! I won't be glazing but using it more as a roadmap. I think if I would have went with glazing I'd use oils for the underpainting in order to have a more refined underpainting. I'm not very good with blending with the acrylics. I know some people use acrylics and do an amazing job. | |

| I've completed the underpainting for the portrait. 8X10 on canvas. Not perfect but I think it will do as an underpainting. | |

| Your under paintings are always almost good enough to stand alone. You definitely have the skill for portraits.

| Thank you Dale and Judy! I'm still working with 8 values but I will gradually lessen the values to 4 or 5. I'll do most of the paintings this month with 8 then reduce them next month. I think for now the 8 values are giving me an extra learning experience with the underpainting in form and values. I think the real test will be with that landscape. That's going to be a real challenge. I'm trying to work on control and the underpainting really helps with that. | |

| Well, this black background is quite the challenge to paint on! Got off to a weak start, not sure if I'll be able to make something of this or not 10 x 14 inches, stretched canvas: I've put the single red apple with his friends from the January Challenge. | |

| Callie, I think it's looking good. One thing I do when working on the black background is I don't use transparent colors and I don't use medium. | |

| There are definitely differences using the black background. I use translucent colors where I want to take advantage of the shadowing effects of the black such as what I did with the rose in the February Challenge. https://watersolubleoils.forumotion.com/group-challenges-f9/february-challenge-t217.htmHighlighting I do in more opaque colors. Layers in between vary with how much I want the previous layers to show through. Good Luck. judy | |

| Thanks for the tips! I think I'll try to get some thick paint on this next - no medium, just straight paint and really lay it on. | |
