Judy, thank you for posting the picture of your Grandson, a fine looking lad even if I couldn't see his face.

I finally found what I wanted in the movie Ben Hur. In fact I found a pose almost exactly as I pictured it in my mind, it is the scene where Juda and Esther meet Balthasar just as Christ is beginning to preach the Sermon on the Mt. The three of them are standing next to a little brook and Juda bends down and fills his hands with water from the brook. I can also use elements of other scenes in the movie like the scene where Juda rescues Quentus Arius after the crash scene and they are floating around on a piece of reckage. Of course I will need to make lots of sketches for this one and learn to paint a passable human being. It will be a project for the next year or two. I know I can do it in pencil and I may have to settle for that. Anyway, it gives me a goal to keep my interest up.

Up date on my project. I solved the image problem and have the pencil drawing about half finished. The kneeling warrior is complete and looks great, his horse is done too. He is 12" tall and his horse is grazing in the background. Today I have been working on the background and foreground figuring out just what I want to include and where to put it. I'm going to do the whole scene as good as I can get it then trace the main features and transfer them to canvass. If the painting flops as least I will have the drawing and I really do enjoy doning pencil drawings. The drawing will be 23"x by 30" so it takes a long time. Pencil goes slower than painting.
Will post two more W/S's in about a week, they are drying now.

I wish I could do that Janet but I don't have the technological devices that make it possible ( and am to old to learn about them). And I don't waste a roll of film for just one or two shots. When the drawing is finished I may have it scanned but my photographer can only scan up to 14x17 so some of the drawing will be cut out but it should catch the main elements.

I too am looking forward to seeing the progress of this work. It sounds ambitious. Oddly enough I've just been looking at my catalogue of the works of Lawrence Alma-Tadema and he sketched and painted many figures from the same era.

Well, I am taking some photos as I go along but who knows if they will come out, I am pretty bad with the camera. Will develop when the roll is finished.

Finished the drawing of my warrior. I discovered yesterday that I hadn't given him a sword!! My first thought was to lay it on top of his saddle blanket and shield but that made things too tight and wouldn't look right so I decided to move his left had from his hip and add the sword and put the left hand around the handle of the sword. That worked pretty well except the Roman sword was three feet long and my warrior was kneeling on one knee so the sword woud up being about 20" long if it were real life. It still looks formable, who will know? I sprayed it with fixitive so it wont smudge when I do my tracing. Ah, maybe I will start the painting next week. At least I have a nice drawing.

Well, I did get up a couple of images. The bottom two are identical and show my warrior and his horse grazing in the background. The third image up is the completed sketch. Over the left shoulder of the warrior you will see his saddle, his saddle blanket and his shield leaning on the saddle. You see my warrior is kneeling
on his left knee, he is drinking a glass of water taken from the brook and he has his left hand on the heft or his sword. I have located him in the steepes of Western Siberia or perhaps Kazakstan. The top image shows the beginning of my painting.
I did a light acrylic painting of the warrior, then just outlined the horse and the saddle, blanket and shield. I then painted blue masking fluid ( Susan Schewe, but any brand would do, I just had a bit left to use) over these so I could paint the rest of the scene. Tonight I pretty much painted the rest of the scene and will let it dry real good before I peal off the masking and then paint the rest of the painting. I have used W/S oils for the entire picture and used the Bob Ross style for every thing except the images I have covered. It will be quite awhile before I get this all finished, a month at least.

Interesting development Linus. I shall watch with interest how you progress. Pleased to see that you researched the Centurion's saddle. It's quite distinctive.
I know you haven't put this forward for critique but if I may make an observation about proportion. The horse is very small, but the proximity of the brook indicates it is not very far away. The easiest way around this would be to go back to your first sketch where the horse does appear further away both from the Centurion and the brook.
Jack

cheers

Jack, did you see the fourth image? Just to the right of the image at the top left? I changed the course of the brook in the fourth image and indeed it does put the horse further back and the Centurion closer. What do you think? Right now I'm having trouble painting the grasses in the steepe. I've wiped off twice and am going to do it again. As I said, I only hope it will all look O.K. I can pretty well guarantee it won't be great ( I don't have the skill for that.) I will have two surprises when I finally post the painted image. I hope it will excite everyone.

Thanks Janet. I am trying. How do you keep up with all this?

Jack, I think I see what you mean now. When I moved from my finished drawing, I changed the location of the brook and destroyed the perspective. I let my attention wander. I've wiped it off again, hope I can make it look O.K.

Looking at the sketch where the brook starts almost level with his knee may well be the right place. Best wishes
