We're under severe weather and tornado warnings here - lightening is getting very bad. So - I'm getting off the computer and heading for the basement. I'll have the challenge up as soon as I can - but it might be a little later than usual.... got to go hide now! May 2010 Challenge Icon_geek

All is well! But between the storm last night and being out of the house most of today... I'm really behind! So let's get this Challenge going!

May's theme is Primary Colors
Use one of the photos below, or use your own reference for this month. Once you've got your subject - pick your palette. Red, yellow, blue and white. Use a typical RYB selection (cadmiums, ultramarine), go high-key (cyan, magenta, lemon) or subdued/earthy (indian red, raw sienna, payne's grey). Use any colors you have to make up one of these RYB palettes (any bright red instead of cadmium, ochre instead of sienna...).

The first photo of the lily pads is especially bland, I thought it might be fun to apply your chosen palette to, you decide whether to brighten it up or keep it rather neutral:
May 2010 Challenge Balboa10

A little more color here, but the same idea - you decide if you want a bright, intense portrait, something more subdued, or somewhere in between:
May 2010 Challenge Babast10

Here's a landscape and an animal - same thing, pick your RYB palette and see what you can do with one of these:

Callie - probably a stupid question, but is it just to limit our pallette to the three primaries, and mix whatever colours we chose with that, or to keep close to the primaries with little colour mixing?

The main thing is what kind of mood/tone you can create with a certain primary palette. If you need to supplement it just a teeny-tiny bit, I'll look the other way May 2010 Challenge Icon_lol The end result should reflect which primary palette you chose (high-key, earthy or basic). Try to mix your colors from that palette, and if you need to supplement just a bit, explain what you did. This could be helpful info for those trying to pare down their palettes.

I think I'd like to get in on this. Good way to start using my brand-newly-acquired WSOs. Just need to get a couple of canvases.

I decided to do a face - I started with a reference pic and then chucked it. I concentrated instead on getting the job done with my three colours and white. I used Ultramarine, Alizarin crimson, and Lemon yellow. I don't have the same facility for portraiture that Janet does, so this practice is good for me. The poor girl ended up with a face like putty, the colour of mud. Smile

Seeing as this is all practice, I kept going - I wanted to give her a livelier colour so she didn't look so much like the living dead. Unfortunately now she looks like she went to Michael Jackson's plastic surgeon. Poor nose! Wink May 2010 Challenge 28731_392843765994_535710994_4544200_1792752_n

I went back and did some more - she looks more like a real person, but her left eye is a bit wonky.

May 2010 Challenge 28731_392843770994_535710994_4544201_5698761_n

I gave it one last shot (okay, I actually took two or three pics between this one and the last) and I think I've corrected the eye problems. This whole exercise has been a great learning experience. Thanks Callie! (the painting is on 6"x8" canvas)

That was fun, seeing how you worked through this. The flesh tones are great!

Finished my first attempt at the limited palette. It's was based on a picture of my daughter. I did tone my canvas with a mix of Raw Umber and Yellow Ochre but after that I used Cadmium Red Hue, Imidazolone Yellow Light and Cerulean Blue. I think it might be a little too light and a little too muddy. Caucasian skin isn't something I'm use to. I can see how the limited palette would help to learn how to stretch your mixing knowledge. Smile

I can see the resemblance - nice portrait May 2010 Challenge Icon_cheers I guess you could punch up the shadows/darks a little if it bugs you, but her skin tones look good on my monitor, so I'm not seeing the muddy stuff. May 2010 Challenge Icon_biggrin

Thank you Callie! I'll work on it some more once it's dry. I do see some areas in form that aren't rite and I agree about the shadows. Thank you for your help! Smile

OK... I'm close to finished with this, though once it dries a little, I have some odds and ends to do. I snapped this quickly outside in cloudy sun, so the fidelity to the original leaves a bit to be desired. Still, I wanted to post it here for comments and suggestions.

This is my first-ever attempt with WSO's, and I must say I really like painting with them. I can see no appreciable difference from using regular oils. I used Artisan Alizarin Crimson, French Ultramarine and Lemon Yellow, lightening and darkening as needed with black and white.

The support is a garden-variety 14x10 canvas panel. When I'm done, I'll update with a (hopefully) better photo.

Here I am having so much trouble switching to WMOs, and you took to them like a duck to water. Congratulations, your portrait is fantastic. I'm glad that they're working so well for you.
