PostSubject: February Challenge   Mon Feb 01, 2010 1:48 am

Welcome to the Group Challenge for February!
Last month's challenge was an opportunity to loosen up and get a little wild with your paintings.
This month we'll go in the opposite direction with It's All in the Details.

The challenge is how to best portray a subject without getting overly caught up in the details. You decide what to leave in, what to edit out, if the scene needs to be cropped, which portions of the picture will get more attention. It's all up to you! Here's one example from someone who was a real master at giving the illusion of detail with a minimum of brush work:

Violet Hammersley 1893 by John Singer Sargent See more here:

Great choices, Callie.

I'll have to make a decision.

Just a note - it's up to you to decide how much or which details to include. For example; the beach scene - people, no people or some people?

You can also crop the picture to get at what you want. Have fun!

Your flower picture is beautiful. I always have trouble insisting that I have a border around subjects like flowers. This would be the perfect one for me to do to break the habit...actually paint off the page.

I decided to do the flowers and I have sketched them on a 9 x 12 canvas board with a black gesso background. I used my soft pastel pencils to do the sketch. I'll be using a mixture of Holbein Duo and Golden Open Acrylics.

There is a lot going on in this picture so I chose different colors of the pastel pencil to help keep things organized.

I love it already! All those colors are really going to "pop" against the black background.

Here is the under painting of the flowers. There is still a long way to go but at least I have all the shapes in to guide me now.

I'll keep you posted as it develops.

Thank you all!
The black gesso is what makes it so easy for me because I don't have to come up with some abstract background which is always a problem for me. I worked on the rose last night and on the orange Lilies??? on the left. I'll be working on it later today and probably post tonight. I'm really happy with how the rose is coming out, and going off the edge of the canvaas is not bothering me at all.

Here is the next progress picture. I'm sorry I didn't get it posted sooner, but I'm busy working on a quilt.

I've been using zinc white which is more transparent than titanium white so the under colors are showing through on the flowers which is nice.

It's looking very pretty.

I'm not going to be able to do a challenge piece this month - too busy preparing for my show and trip - but it's fun to follow along with those that are doing it.

Thanks Janet,
I haven't had a chance to work on it any further. Maybe this week end.

Tried out the clear gesso on paper. Started off with a freehand sketch (Wow am I rusty). The graphite sketch did smudge some when I applied the clear gesso but not too bad. My drawing was not very accurate so I'll be working in this way for a while. Smile

Good start, Janet. Check his ear position before you get too much further along - it's looking rather low compared to the pic.
Love the shiny yellow on his jacket!

I have yet to start a painting

Thank you Callie for the help and kind words! That ear is really off. This is actually finished. I'm still working on getting it rite in one session. I know it will take a while to get where I want to be but I learn more and faster this way. Take a stab at it and move on. I learn something new on each painting. With this one I learned that black is not as evil as I thought. Just a matter of adding small amounts. I learned that drawing is not like riding a bike and I'll need to do a lot of practicing. Smile

I know what you mean about the drawing. When I took up painting again after a 20+ year "break", I was a bit surprised to find my drawing skills were rusty - imagine that!

It amazes me when someone can accomplish so much in one session. It all looks great except the ear. The "general rule" of thumb for ears is that they start at the level of the eye brows and go to the level of the tip of the nose. This is just a guideline but is true more than it it not.
