cheers I just finished watching the videos and it was fantastic! I just love the way it transported me back in time so affectively. I think one of the reasons I'm drawn to old master paintings is that glimpse into the past. That's probably why I'm drawn to certain types of reference photos I'm always looking for that glimpse into the past. Photos that portray scenes and people that retain some of their cultural past. Thank you again Dale! Smile

Janet,
If you think of it, we would love to see some of your favorite reference photos.

I know that i loved the people in the hay fields. I know this is off topic, but we have a location near Fredericton, NB called "Kings Landing". They have taken houses from around the area and built a village complete with a Blacksmith's shop, Inn, Grist Mill and Lumber Mill as well as farms and Churches. I have spent so much time there and taken a lot of photos for painting references. If you are interested, I could post them on the reference site.

Dale, I would love to see your photos as well and would appreciate having some portrait or figure picture in our RIL. We have a pioneer village that sounds similar It would be a great way to capture an image that has that old world feel. Thank you for the idea!

The painting you posted, "Gleaners at Rest my John Ottis Adams" is one of my favorites I find it does give a snapshot of daily life during that time period and the colors are wonderful.

I've copied it in colored pencil and graphite so far:

It was part of last months challenge but I never got around to painting it. It's very unusual for me to do the same reference more then once.

Most of the reference photos that I use which you may find interesting as well are from Steve Evans (babasteve). Many of his photos have that cultural feel that I'm always looking for. He uploads new photos on a regular basis. Here's a link to his Flickr photostream: http://www.flickr.com/photos/babasteve/

Dale, That's a great video and it really give a great understanding of his style. I was thinking of purchasing one of his videos so this gives me an idea of what to expect. Thank you!
