snowy sunset in the desert Empty
PostSubject: snowy sunset in the desert   snowy sunset in the desert EmptySat Jan 30, 2010 8:06 pm

The sunset after the snow in the desert was spectacuar. The mountains always turn a sort of a salmon color, but this evening with the snow and clouds and haze, the mountain was just glowing in the salmon color. Unfortunately, I only had my cellphone camera handy and I zoomed in which resulted in a very small picture.snowy sunset in the desert Pic01210I've started painting on a 22 x28 inch stretched canvas which I prepared with two coats of clear gesso. I'm using WN Artisan WS Oil paints and walnut oil alkyd medium. My plan is to get the sky and mountain done with different values and then glaze with colors to accomplish the salmon color.

My only worry right now is that I used Cad red light and cobalt blue to make my gray. This was fine, but if I have to add any yellow in my glazing I'm afraid some of the areas might come out slightly greenish because of the gray does fluctuate between more blue and more cad red. Hopefully, multiple glazes with reds first will create more of a violet and pink. then the yello might not be so bad.

Thanks Sofie,

i'm going to try to scrub out some color today. I'm not used to glazing over an under painting, so this is a challenge.

I did some scrubbing of color but want to wait for more drying before I start the glazing.

I'm still considering what I want to do with the foreground. The photo doesn't really show anything very exciting or complementary to the painting. With all the snow in the mountains, our normally dry or minimally flowing rivers, have a lot of water in them. Water is always a nice way to get reflections to enhance the overall painting.

I'm actually on the bank of the river, but the main bed is obscured by all the foliage that grows with the river bed being dry most of the time.. I might do some alterations. snowy sunset in the desert Icon_twisted

Here's my first glazing. The light cad red with walnut alkyd is close to what the color looks like, but I think I'm going to have lighten the shadows or something.
I put the same color in the foreground so it will carry through when I start painting it in. I took some great sunset pictures the other night up on the slope of the mountain to the west of me and I think I know which one I'll use to make the foreground more interesting without taking away from the mountains.

This is going to be a tough one.

It'll be fascinating watching the glazing stages. It's looking richer already. Smile

I finally got the mountain and sky done. I dabbed white over the whole thing with a flared out brush to give the whole thing more of a hazy feel and then when that dried, I did several layers more or the cad red light, a touch of ochre here and there and I added some clouds drifting in front of the mountain. The grays in the sky were from the same cobolt and cad red light mixture I used for the mountain shadows.

Once I was satisfied with the sky and mountains, I started putting in the foreground. Once this dries, I will start with the detail work. I had been pretty worried about the success of the painting up to this point, but once the foreground was roughly painted in, I started to feel a little more confident.

I am having breathing problems with the alkyd the longer I use it, so the finishing stages will probably be done with just plain walnut oil which doesn't bother me. It will slow down the process, but I rather that then having to take breathing medicine unnecessarily.

Love the effect the red glaze gave this. It's looking very good!

Too bad you can't continue to use the quick-dry mediums snowy sunset in the desert Icon_cry But I'm sure you'll come up with a process that works for you. Maybe a few layers of acrylic glazes to get things going, then top it off with the oils so you cut down on some drying time at the start.

Looking forward to seeing the finished piece!

Thank you all,

I think what I am going to do is work outside to finish it up. That way I can continue with the alkyd to finish the painting. With all the fresh air, it shouldn't bother me.

It is 64 degrees and sunny right now outside at 2 PM and no wind so it would be perfect for that.

I think this is finished. I have to look at it a few days to decide.

The cactus on the right has a glare on it. It is really about the same as the big one to the left.

You've really created a lot of depth. Lovely soft colours in the background, and an interesting foreground really make the painting work. Smile
