| I found an email in my inbox today asking me to check out this forum. I don't know how you found me, but thanks for the invite. I've been working in water miscible oils for 6-8 months and my acrylics are feeling decidedly lonely because I'm almost totally ignoring them. I only know a couple of other people using these paints so it's nice to have a place where I can get more information and feedback on their use.
I'll spend the evening exploring all the forums. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you.

| Welcome to the Forum Sophie,
It really helps to have a place to where you can talk and meet others using the WSO like you are. I've used them for 3 years and still keep learning the more I read.
I look forward to seeing your work and sharing things with you.

| Hi Sophie! Welcome to the forum! Glad to have you on board! My acrylics are collectng dust. I still use them for toning my canvas but all and all I've moved on. Acrylics are a great medium when you want something that dries really fast. | |

| Hi Sophie! Good to have you here. Seems to be a growing trend (since water miscable oils have become more common) - acrylic painters moving to wm oils. I just got a few tubes of Golden Open acrylics since I keep hearing how wonderful they are. They're OK, but they just don't have the body and texture like oils. Same as Janet - I use them for toning canvasses.

| I was wondering about that - is there a problem on painting with oils over acrylics? Do the oils really stick? Leena | |

| Leena, I don't find a problem with working with oils over acrylics. I keep my acrylics thin. It works great! I might grab some of my duds in acrylics and try sanding them over a bit first and paint over them with my water soluble oils. | |

Leena Hi Leena, If you ever have a chance to watch Jerry Yarnell on PBS, he has a series where he paint a landscape with acrylics. He does all the distant things like the sky, horizon trees, water in the foreground and all the trunks and branches of the closer trees. He does not stress that the acrylic has to be very thin. He applies it just as if he was doing the painting completely in acrylics. When that is all dry, he puts a very thin film of WSO linseed oil over the entire painting. He explains that this acts as a bonding agent between the acrylic and WSO and helps the paint spread more easily over the acrylic. He wipes off any excess oil with a paper towel stressing that this should only be a very thin film. With the WSO he puts all the foliage on the trees, adds highlight color to the background where he wants, puts all the plants and logs and whatever else there is surrounding the water and produces a vibrant landscape with the combination. Hope that helps. Judy | |

| There's a show on PBS - The Beauty of Oil Painting with Gary and Kathwren Jenkins. They do lots of florals and garden scenes. Always beginning with an acrylic background which is oiled over (like Judy's example), then painted wet on wet with oils. Seems to be a pretty common/standard method. | |

| I love watching them. Unfortunartely, here in Arizona they don't have any art shows. you have to have expanded cable and you can see them on the Create Channel. In NY in the summer I watched them all the time but received an email several months ago that they would only be on the Create channel. That's really sad for those of us that only have basic cable.
I do have one of their DVD's, though, so I get to watch them.

| Judy - do you get the regular digital broadcasts? I don't have cable, but since we went digital, we've got 4 PBS channels including Create. I like to paint while Bob Ross is on | |
