Looking In 19875_280941945994_535710994_3913836_1747720_n

I covered this 12x18 canvas with a light wash using cad yellow hue and magenta and odourless thinner. I then sketched in my picture in paint using a brown I made with artisan raw umber and magenta. As I continued to work in the elements of the picture I also used a bit of cad red, some cad yellow light, titanium white. Photo taken indoors at night without a flash so the colours are a bit ambered. I'm working from a photo I took on New Years Eve looking into my friend's kitchen.

Looking In Icon_twisted Peeping Thomasina - that's me!

I'm just finishing up a series of window paintings for my show in March - looking out and looking in, based on windows in my house and two of my friends' houses. I've got way less looking in ones, so I asked my friend if I could take some photos to work from while she was preparing for her New Years party.

Looking In 19875_280941950994_535710994_3913837_6675009_n

I've filled things in a bit using more yellows and ochres and a some red. I'm keeping things a bit indistinct. Added some white on the window where it's misted up.

Looking In 19875_282298840994_535710994_3917700_264516_n

Here's the finished product, photographed outdoors, so the colour is more real with less of that lovely amber tinge. I developed the background more, Darkened the windowframe, and re-did the mist on the window with zinc white.

Nice job, Sofie.

I was wondering how you were going to transform it from the subdued lighting inside to a very balance image of a person looking in.

Well done Sofie! I like the zinc white widow treatment. Smile Yes we all need to be painting in real light. My stuff changes temperature too when I take it away from my easel or drawing board.

Thanks Judy, Tommy, and Janet! Smile I still have two more paintings to finish up for my show next month - you'll probably be seeing them posted in WIP in the next few days.

I thought the gal in there had a snaggle tooth, then I got closer and realized it was time to clean the lint off the screen! Looking In Icon_lol

Well done! Makes me want to know what they're talking about. I like how the frost covers some of the scene - instead of showing us every detail - it adds some intrigue.
